THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Friday, January 8, 1965 AMONG THE PR OFS l . 1 | School Directors | 1 Host A&M Profs 1 Si Si Four A&M faculty members and two doctoral students from the Department of Education and Psychology are attending sessions of the School Administrators Ad visory Conference on Education meeting in Austin. The Texas Education Agency sponsors the annual meeting at which schoolmen review the pro grams and services of the agency and give guidelines for the future. Invited as professors of educa tional administration were Grady P. Parker, Robert S. Randall, Wil liam H. Graves and Paul Hensar- ling. The doctoral students in educa tional administration who also plan to attend the conference are Paul Stevens of Fort Worth and John Hoyle of Bryan. Hensarling said that during the conference officers and directors of the Texas Association of Coun ty Superintendents, Texas School Administrators Association and the Texas Association of Instruc tional Supervisors will meet to begin organizational planning for the annual schoolmen’s conference held here in June. teachers may choose to complete the course for extension graduate credit from A&M. An introductory course in mete orology has been offered by A&M under NSF sponsorship during the current semester. Openings will exist in the new course, Loyd said. Enrollment will be limited to 25 students. ★ ★ ★ Two professors of English are authors of publications in this country and England. Professor E. E. Stokes Jr., is author of an article appearing in “The Shavian,” journal of the Shaw Society, London. “Jon- son’s ‘Humour’ Plays and Some Later Plays of Bernard Shaw” is the title. Associate professor Harrison E. Hierth is the author of two articles. One is the lead article in this month’s “CEA Critic,” publication of the College Eng lish Association. The article entitled by the editors “The Class Novel” concerns Edith Wharton and John O’Hara. New Lift For Higher Education Bored with swallowing goldfish and jamm ing into phone booths, college boys at Los Angeles’ University of Southern California have taken up “Volks-toting.” The driver and 12 friends pick up a 1,600 pound VW carry it 100 feet, then climb into—and on to—the car to race back to the starting line. Kappa Alpha fen were disqualified for dropping their vehicle, and Kappa Sigma went on to win in 22.5 seconds. NSF To Support A&M Bat Study The National Science Foundation has made a three-year, $35,000 grant to A&M for support of re search concerning the bats of Cen tral America from southern Mexi co into Nicaragua, announced President Earl Rudder. Directing the research which in volves a series of expeditions into the Central America region will be Dr. W. B. Davis and Dr. Dil- ford C. Carter of the Department of Wildlife Management. Davis is department head. The two have for several years researched the bats southward through Central America into South America under National In stitutes of Health sponsorship. The NSF grant is to study the bat population from a new angle. We’re trying to determine to what extent we can predict what kinds of bats live in which zones,” Davis said of one objective. He pointed out that bats account for about 50 per cent of the kinds of animals found in Central Ameri ca. In Nicaragua, for example, there are fruit-eating bats, fish eaters, nectar-eating bats, blood eater® and even cannibalistic bats. The geographical area, the Cen tral American core, in which Dav is and Carter will work under the grant is an ancient mountain mass, one not inundated by the set for ages. Thus the studies may pro vide new insights into the r tion of bats. Carter will leave Feb, 1 the first expedition under grant, while Davis plans to various museums in this cost for intensive study of sped; already collected in the 0 American core.
