THE BATTALION Page 8 College Station, Texas Thursday, January 7, 1965 FROM THE Sidelined By LANI PRESSWOOD Irony has reared its mischievous head once again. What happens to a baseball slugger when it’s “Resin Pinetar Day” at the ball park? Sure, Resin pops up twice, fans and feebly taps into a rally-killing double play. The next afternoon Resin will be the fence-buster of old but for this special occasion the gremlins that be take hold of the proceedings. Thus the news that A&M’s Shelby Metcalf has been voted 1964 Senior College Coach of The Year by the sports writers was released the same morning the papers carried the Baylor upset story. It’s pure irony. The 34-year-old Metcalf has seen a disappointing scoreboard only twice now in 15 conference games. This was his first such experience at home since he took over the varsity reins. The likeable mentor has never been associated with a losing basketball team. His high school team in Tulsa was a finalist in the state tournament. He moved up to college ball and sparked East Texas State to three straight national tourneys and the national championship in 1955. He was named to the Helms Foundation’s Little All-America team. His first crack at coaching was at Cayuga, Texas where he chalked up a 33-10 record. Next came an overseas stint in the Air Force during which he coached a club that won the Gearmany district basketball title two straight years. He then arrived at Aggieland as freshman coach under Bob Rogers. His quintets posted an overall 41-19 slate for five seasons. His promotion to head coach last season resulted in the first outright SWC crown in 41 years for the Aggies. The ’64 crew was called the Cinderella team. It was for molding this club that he has been honored, one of the few times the award has ever been given to a cage coach. A&M’s unofficial ambassador of good will pulled an amazing coaching coup, brought excellent publicity to the school and provided Aggies with many unforgettable mo ments of exciting basketball action. It will take more than a 3-point setback by a good Baylor club to erase that from memory.
