A record number of fellowships and assistantships for graduate study at A&M is being offered for 1965-66, Graduate Dean Wayne C. Hall announced. He said the fig ure represents a continuing trend for A&M and the nation of in creased emphasis upon studies be yond the bachelor’s degree. The financial support totaling about $1,000,000 is from varied governmental and private sources. Master’s degrees may be earned in more than 90 fields of speciali zation at A&M and the Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered in more than 45 departments or in terdisciplinary programs. The Doc tor of Education degree is availa ble in industrial education. “All applications for assistant- ships and fellowships must be re ceived on or before March 1,” Hall said. ★ ★ ★ Professor Bob M. Gallaway of the Department of Civil Engi neering will present a special lecture to the University of Tex as senior class in bituminous materials. He will speak at 9 a.m. Thursday on “Asphalt Seal Coats and Surface Treatment Operations.” Gallaway is a research engi neer with the Texas Transporta tion Institute. The class which will hear Gal laway is taught by Ronald Hud son, research engineer with the Center for Highway Research at UT. ★ ★ ★ Two members of the Department of Civil Engineering presented pro grams to area high school clubs of JETS, Junior Engineering Tech nical Society. Professor Bob M. Gallaway spoke Monday to the Caldwell High School club sponsored by Carl Glass. Assistant professor Robert M. Olson spoke Tuesday to the Kemp High School unit sponsored by Troy Johnson. The professors discuss “Engi neering, A Creative Profession” and show a movie. ★ ★ ★ A gmup of agricultural ex perimenters, in cooperation with ‘Lame Duck’ May Be Gone The dread that students have of returning from Christmas vaca tions to “cram” for upcoming finals may be alleviated within two years. Discussing the school calendar, Dr. William J. Graff, dean of in struction, said that the “lame duck” period after Christmas vaca tions might be avoided if the tradi tional calendar could be altered. Moving up the finals before Christmas vacations would neces sitate an earlier opening of the fall semester. Traditionally, pri mary and secondary schools opened after Labor Day, but since they have begun moving away from this custom to an earlier opening, col leges and universities could make similar adjustments. Although a semester of 80 working days is desirable, a 75 day semester from Sept. 1 to Dec. 23 would suffice, he said. The spring semester would then start two weeks later. Dean Graff said that the change was, “on the horizon,” perhaps in one or two years. He regards the proposed change as “an im provement.” the Hercules Powder Company have been working on the prob lem of herbicide drift. The project is headed by Rob ert Hass, assistant professor in the Department of Range and Forestry. Herbicide drift is the move ment of very fine droplets of spray in the air which can be harmful if they settle on crops. The researchers are trying to control mesquite and post oak. “The main problem with spary- ing is controlling the size of spray droplets. This has a di rect affect on the amount of drift,” said Stan K. Lehman, co-worker in the project. ★ ★ ★ Daniel L. Hollis Jr., on faculty leave from the University of Ala bama, has been awarded a Na tional Science Foundation Fellow ship for doctoral wrok at A&M. The fellowship, valued at ap proximately $3,600, is for an eight- month period ending in August, 1965. To qualify for the fellow ship, candidates must be college professors in engineering or sci ence and have at least' three years teaching experience. Hollis is working on a theory project in plasma research as his dissertation for a doctorate in nuc lear engineering. He holds two masters degrees from Alabama— an M.A. in mathematics and an M.S. in physics—and a bachelor of science degree from the U. S. Naval Academy. The fellowship winner began work on his doctorate at A&M in the summer of 1962. He has con tinued work each summer, work ing half-time as a nuclear reactor operator at the Nuclear Science Center. does your CAR WANDER OR WEAVE?
