Meets The Press
(Editor’s note: the ensuing article is taken from a press
conference held by new A&M Football Coach Gene Stallings
Monday afternoon in the Lettermen’s Lounge.)
Q. Would you care to make any preliminary remarks?
A. First off, there are not a lot of schools I'd have
considered going to. I have reason to believe that the
Alabama coaching job would have been offered to me in
another couple of years. But being a graduate of A&M
and very close to the school, I was thrilled to death to
get the job. I’ve received a jillion letters from friends
and Aggie exes, and I’m ready to start to work.
Q. What about your staff?
A. I’ll have eight assistants. Most of them I’ve al
ready hired. One or two I’m going to take my time about.
They’ll be announced within the next few days.
Q. From a first impression, how does your personnel
look as compared with the first squad Coach Bryant had
at Alabama?
A. Physically, I think these players are a better
looking group of kids than we inherited at Alabama. I’m
very impressed. They look like they’re ready to play.
Q. What about the team’s confidence?
A. Confidence is always important when a coaching
change is made. I hope to instill pride in this team.
Winning is built around pride, determination, and dedica
tion. If they really believe in A&M they’re going to win
some football games. I believe that.
Q. How did you get your nickname, Bebes?
A. My little brother couldn’t say Gene, he said Baby,
and it came out Bebes. It’s followed me ever since.
Q. What is your weight history?
A. I weighed about 160 when A&M recruited me
at Paris. My senior year here I weighed about 168. Now
I weigh 180.
Q. Do you think your age (29) will be a factor in
your success here?
A. Yes, I think my age is to my advantage. Being
younger you can get closer to your squad at times and
you should be able to work longer and harder.
Q. What are you going to look for next spring?
A. I’ve never seen a real good football team that
didn’t have a good quarterback. I think it all starts with
that quarterback. We’re going to try to find someone who
can move the ball club. Defensively, we’re going to look
for linebackers and safeties first.
Q. What about your substitution plan?
A. Initially, I’ll work everybody both ways. If we
have enough good football players, we’ll play both ways.
If not, we’ll play our best boys.
Q. Did Coach Bryant leave you with any advice?
A. Yes, he said ‘don’t look back’, ‘don’t lose your
guts’, and ‘go out on that field and make something happen.’
