T. s Thursday Night Sadie Hawkins Dance Every Wednesday Night Johnny & The Diamonds NEZZIE’S Highway 6 North 77tl who had visited Rice on their own) stopped me and talked about en tering Rice. I tried to be cordial. And they left. “About two weeks later, Bill Beall (assistant Coach) of LSU visited us and said he understood the Latourette boy was interested in Rice. I said ‘Oh, yes, the boy was here, I recall. Do you know anything about him ? And he pro ceeded to tell me he was one of the more widely-sought backs in the South. So I hurried to the phone and told him ‘Boy, you come on over here. You don’t need to make any other plans.’ And he came, on scholarship.” Terry, former Highland Park quarterback, came to SMU as a recent transfer after first enroll ing at Washington. With Danny Thomas ailing, Ter ry has been doing the SMU punt ing and doing it at a 40.4 clip. But this is good only for second place behind Latourette who made his debut against LSU and boomed 10 punts for a fine 43.8 average. Frosh Gridders Prep For Wogs The A&M freshman football squad has been working out daily since Oct. 14 in preparation for Wednesday night’s opener with the TCU Wogs. Frosh Coach Dick Johnson has been sending his charges through rugged evening workouts stressing conditioning and fundamentals. The Fish have battled the var sity reesrves and redshirts three times in game condition scrim mages, Johnson said. This is more early scrimmaging than was done by last year’s Fish gridders who posted a 4-1 record. A stiff workout is on tap for this afternoon with a possible scrimmage session Saturday. The squad will run through a series of polishing drills early next week in their final tune-up for the Wogs. The season opener for both clubs will be played in Fort Worth. A crowd of 25,000 is expected for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. A tentative starting line-up has been announced by Johnson: Mac Smith of Weatherford, Mark Weaver from Victoria, and Nacog doches’ Grady Allen hold down the end berths. Dickie Muehr of Weimar and shot put king Howard Van Loon of Rotan man the tackle slots. The starting guards are Jerry Brasuel from Lubbock and Billy Barker of Baytown. The backfield consists of Gary Kemph from San Antonio Lee at the man-under position, Ronney Menn of Rockdale and Bill Sallee of Midland at the halfbacks and either Jackie Benesh from Corpus Christi Ray or Robert Cortez of San Benito at fullback. Currently running second team are quarterback Gene Harvey of Victoria, and halfbacks Rusty Har ris of Abilene and Scott Blessing from Dallas Hillcrest. They are operating behind a line consisting of Roy Gunnels of Mala- koff at center, end Jerry Richard son of Houston Memorial, tackles Ricky Paris of Dallas Kimball and Jimmy Kazmierski of South Hous ton, and guards Ronnie Lammert of Katy and Ronnie Knott of Kemp. AP Predicts Upset By Dietzel’s Cadets LOS ANGELES )—Paul Dietz- el of Army is a proud man. Few coaches are better able to fire up. a team for a big game. Texas has been winning enough to get com placent. These are the ingredients of which upsets are made.
