Main TA 2-6000 not have to use to gain his sub sistence or devote to such neces sities of life as sleeping, eating and keeping clean. Some call it dis cretionary time or choosing time— time when one can choose to do as he pleases. Recreation has become a major form of leisure time activity, Brown points out, but the two are not identical. Leisure is primari ly the opportunity for self-expres sion. It may include gardening, reading, pursuing a hobby, or oth er activities chosen to satisfy cer tain inner needs, even though the doing may be difficult or pain staking or require years of study and practice. “Americans have more free time to use for discretionary activities now than ever before, and this will likely increase in the near future,” predicts Brown. Agriculture’s work week, as in industry, has been shortened con siderably and paid vacation time is standard for almost all forms of employment except those in unskilled brackets. While many people retire from paid employment later in life than before, they still have more years in retirement than formerly sim ply because life expectancy is greater. Most of our older citizens have better health when they retire as well as better retirement in comes. Their use of leisure time will be an important factor, says Brown, in their adjustment to life and to roles in the community. 80 Art Miniatures Slated For Exhibit Eighty contemporary miniature prints of 12 artists will be on ex hibit in the Memorial Student Cen ter Oct. 12 through Nov. 8. Sponsored by the MSC Creative Arts Committee, the exhibit will include work by artists in etching and engraving, lithography, wood- cut, linoleum block and serigraphy.
