Page 4 College Station, Texas Tuesday, September 22, 1964 THE BATTALION Aggies Drop Season Opener; Late Maroon Rally Stopped By TEX ROGERS Sports Editor The Louisiana State I turned a blocked punt into a touch down, added a field goal in the Tigers * second half, and staved off a senior | revolutionized Aggie rally in the waning minutes of play for a 9-6 win Saturday before 68,000 fans in LSU’s Holler Hole in Baton Rouge. LSU’s only TD came with 23 seconds left in the opening period when Tiger tackle Tom Fussell slipped through a battery of Aggie blockers to deflect a punt off Phil Scoggin’s foot and pounced upon the loose ball in the end zone for six points. It was the second year in a row that the kicking game clobbered the Aggies. In 1963 Bengal half back Joe Labruzzo raced 83 yards on a punt return to give the Tigers a 14-6 win. It was tough for the Cadets from the start with the backfield of Dan Mcllhany, Budgie Ford, Jim Stabler and Tommy Meeks being bottled up for only 17 yards on the ground in the first quarter. In the meantime, LSU quarter back Pat Screen, halfback La bruzzo and catch-happy end Doug Moreau kept the Aggie defense to the wall in the first half. Only when the second ground platoon entered the fight in the second period did the Maroon of fense seem to click, thanks to the scampering sweeps of sophomore Lloyd Curington and the bruising power of fullbock Joe Weiss. Twice the Tigers were on the move to Maroon Paydirt, only to be stopped by vicious line play that resulted in fumbles that fell into Aggie hands. But LSU finally worked within reach of the A&M goal line and notched its remaining three points with a 34-yard field goal by Moreau with 1:41 left before Coach Hank Foldberg and the Cadets could retreat to the dressing room. The second half opened with 01’ Army fighting back with the de sire of a team who wants to win, putting on one of the greatest comeback exhibitions in recent Aggie years. Only twice did LSU come within reach of the Aggie goal, once to the 2,0 and once, in the opening minutes of the second half when Moreau fumbled a pass on the Aggie one that was recovered by Rickey Whatley, his second of the evening. A&M held its ground, took some away from the Tigers, and finally started a drive for the first Aggie tally of 1964. The initial Maroon mark came in the final period when they took over on their own 19. Mcllhany hit end Billy Uzzell for 11 yards to the 30 and after a four yard gain by Stabler, connected with Uzzell again for 13 to the 44. From there the Aggie offense developed a machine that kept on rolling downfield. The drive finally ended with Jim Stabler crashing over right tackle from the two, making the game LSU 9, A&M 6, with 5:04 left in the game. Time was then the culprit, run ning off and leaving the fighting Aggies behind.
