Zinnias Add
Color, Sparkle
To Gardens
By A. F. DeWERTH
Professor of Floriculture
A&M University
One of the most popular flowers
for a colorful garden is the zinnia.
To get your gardening program
into full swing next spring, start
planning now and consider this
annual as a “must” for color.
Zinnias are easily grown from
seed and bloom in only six to eight
weeks. They continue to produce
showy blooms during the entire
summer.
Since zinnias can be sown out
doors with great success, they can
be planted in the ground where
they are to grow as soon as the
soil becomes warm in the spring.
A warm sunny location is best,
one-fourth inch deep and about
one-fourth inch deep a nd about
four inches apart. Keep the soil
moist but not wet, and do not let
it dry out until the seedlings
emerge. Then keep the soil rather
dry and thin out seedlings, leaving
them eight to 18 inches apart de
pending upon the type plant being
grown.
As soon as the first flower bud
is produced, pinch it off so that
the plant will develop lateral shoots
and produce a bushy plant with
numerous flowers.
Since zinnias require large quan
tities of water, soak the soil well,
watering below the foliage to keep
the leaves dry and to avoid mildew.
There are many kinds and types
of zinnias in a wide range of colors
and varieties. While the horticul
tural forms are myriad, the aver
age gardner will have a general
knowledge of what is available
from the following groups.
Cupid zinnias are the dwarfest
and most campact type, seldom
growing more than 12 inches tall.
However, Mexican zinnias grow
slightly taller, reaching from 12 to
15 inches.
the rules committee and told what
the penalties were for not follow
ing these rules.
When Taylor called special at
tention to the two man rule and
the platoon sub changes, Fold
berg explained that two substi
tutions may be made any time the
clock is running but for the en
tire platoon to be substituted, the
clock must be stopped. Foldberg
said the team that failed to fol
low the two man rule would be
assessed a time out whether time
was called or not. If all time outs
were used, he said, a five yard
penalty would be marked off.
Taylor questioned Gammon on
the top teams in the Southwest
Conference, being picked as Rice
and Texas. The publicist said that
Rice lost nine lettermen, had 24
returning players and had an all
around strong team. Texas lost
17 lettermen with 28 returning.
Gammon said the writers pick
no certain strong team but expect
a wide open race. He added that
A&M’s Dan Mcllhaney may be a
surprise as a conference quarter
back. Gammon said Mcllhaney
had the whole team behind him
The sports writer said, “We’rei
looking for a victory against LSU
and if we get it, we’ll be hard
to stop.”
Foldberg commented on the fact
that the Aggies have more play
ing experience of any team since
he has been here and that the
athletic ability of the team is im
proved and they are looking at the
season with a winning outlook.
