THE BATTALION
Will A&M Fool The ‘Experts’?
By SPEC GAMMON
Editor’s note: The following
is reprinted from the August
issue of The Texas Aggie, pub
lication for Former Students of
Texas A&M, with the permission
of Editor Karl Elmquist.
Will A&M Fool The ‘Experts’?
One summer football magazine
contained these statements con
cerning the Texas Aggies:
“The Aggies will drag up the
rear as is their custom. A&M hit
its peak in the near upset of Texas
on Thanksgiving Day. Nobody ex
pects the Aggies to reach such a
height in 1964.”
The author, without a doubt,
hadn’t conversed with the Aggies
on this.
Summer prognostications on
Southwest Conference football
seem to have a habit of going
awry. Surprises are the rule

rather than the exception in this
topsy - turvy collegiate football
league.
On paper, perhaps, and judged
on recent records, the Aggies rate
the tailend position on a pre-season
forecast.
But the intangibles—spirit, dedi
cation, desire—can’t be measured,
and it is on these that the 1964
Texas Aggies base their case.
The 1964 seniors—15 lettermen
strong—have dedicated themselves
to completing their collegiate foot
ball careers on a winning note.
This is a closely-knit squad that
goes into the 1964 campaign with
out an established super-star. But
it is a group that has a burning
desire for success and recognition.
★ ★ ★
In the minds of the returning
Aggie lettermen—24 in all—the
Thanksgiving Day effort against
Texas was not a closing note, but
the beginning of a climb upward
in SWC circles.
The momentum carried over
through spring training—termed
by veteran observers as the best
at Aggieland in many years—and
it’s expected to continue when fall
practice opens September 1.
Offense was stressed during the
spring, and the 1964 Aggies will
have more firepower in their attack
this fall. Senior Dan Mcllhany is
expected to guide the offense from
his quarterback slot. He has the
makings of the best Aggie field
general in years.
Budgie Ford, another senior and
erstwhile halfback, opens the ’64
season as the No. 1 fullback. At
186. pounds he may be the league’s
smallest fullback, but his spring
training performance indicated he
also may be one of the best.
Veteran Tommy Meeks, strong
blocker, good receiver and runner,
opens at right half, and sophomore
Ronnie Lindsey, a speedster with
heft (202 pounds) gets the pre
season nod for the left-half slot.
Those four finished first in
spring training. They’ll discover
that fall practice will bring renewed
efforts to dislodge them, by such
worthies as Jim Willenborg, Eddie
McKaughan, Charles LaGrange,
and Harry Ledbetter at quarter
back; Mike Pitman, Lloyd Curing-
ton, Mike Phillips, Bubber Collins,
Mike Devine, Jerry Nichols, Jim
Stabler, Dan Westerfield, and Ken
Caffey among the halfback corps;
Jerry Katchtik, Mike Kohlman, and
Joe Weiss at fullback.
Mira on The Move
College All-Star quarterback George Mira from Miami of
Florida puts on the speed as Chicago Bears defensive end
Ed O’Bradovich, closes in during the fourth quarter of the
All Star Game in Chicago. A&M’s Ray Kubala saw con
siderable action. The Bears won 28 to 17. (AP Wirephoto)
