Three nuclear-powered warships,
spearheaded by the attack aircraft
carrier USS Enterprise, will pass
Gibraltar Friday on the first leg
of an unprecedented nuclear pow
ered cruise around the world.
The two-month long cruise will
cover 30,000 miles and the ships
will probably cross the equator four
times. Good-will port calls will be
announced individually as diplo
matic arrangements are made.
The force will sail around Africa,
through southern Asian and Pacific
waters and up the east coast of
South America before it returns to
the U. S. in early October. The
ships will not pass through either
the Suez or Panama canals which
are too small for the 85,000-ton
Enterprise — world’s largest war
ship.
Escorting the “Big E” will be
two guided missile ships, the cruis
er USS Long Beach and the frigate
USS Bainbridge.
The operation, named “Sea Or
bit”, will be the first ’round the
world cruise to be made by one or
more nuclear-powered surface
ships.
The Navy’s primary mission in
“Sea Orbit” is to gain practical
experience in operating its new
atomic warships together for the
first time on a long voyage. The
entire cruise will be conducted en
tirely without refueling or replen
ishment of supplies.
Excluding purely operational de
ployments, the Navy has not made
an announced world cruise since
the 16 battleships of the Great
White Fleet showed the U. S. flag
abroad December 1907—February
1909.
Since the 1955 launching of the
submarine USS Nautilus, the first
ship to sail on nuclear power, the
Navy has scheduled two other iiu
tentional circumnavigations — each
by a submarine. In 1958, the USS
Skate went around in 50 minutes—
on a 12-mile circle of the North
Pole. And in 1960, the USS Triton
went around completely submerged
—following the route of Magellan’s
historic expedition.
WORE THEM OUT?
Western Young told police re
cently that someone stole a pair
of shoes from his home. Two
weeks later the thief returned,
left the shoes first stolen and
took another pair.

Training Center
Plans Announced
THE BATTALION
Thursday, July 30, 1964
College Station, Texas
Page 3
Officials from A&M University
and Howard County Junior College
of Big Spring have announced
plans to establish a regional police
training center in the West Texas
city.
The first course in police train
ing will be offered Sept. 21 at
HCJC, Wallace Beasley of A&M’s
Engineering Extension Service, re
ported.
It will be the fourth police train
ing center operated by A&M and
other schools. Others are located
at Weslaco, Arlington and College
Station.
Howard County Junior College
will provide facilities, and the in
struction will be given by A&M
police training school staff mem
bers and guest lecturers from law
enforcement agencies, Beasley add
ed.
Dr. W. A. Hunt, president of
HCJC, said the college also will
provide instructors. Food services
and housing accommodations will
be made available, he added.
The new regional school will pro
vide training for policemen
throughout West Texas, Beasley
explained, including courses in po
lice science for lawmen in the area.
A four-week course in basic po
lice work will be conducted in Sep
tember, and additional classes will
be held later on, Beasley, coordi
nator of police training at A&M,
said.
Subjects to be covered include
police responsibility, duties and
authority, patrol methods and pro
cedures, criminal law, traffic con
trol, accident investigation, juve
nile control and related topics.
. Gen.
Air Force
The Southwest’s top Air Force
Reserve officers arrived here
Thursday morning to inspect the
9412th Reserve Recovery Squadron
training at Easterwood Airport.
A party of 13 officers, led by
Brig. Gen. Charles E. Heidingsfel-
der Jr., were briefed on the local
unit’s active duty tour and were to
visit the squadron’s facilities. Gen
eral Heidingsfelder, a resident of
Houston and a veteran of 23 years
of military service, is deputy com
mander of the 4th Air Reserve Re
gion which includes Texas, Okla
homa and New Mexico.
Other key officers in the group
include Col. George S. Brewer,
commander of the 2484th Reserve
Sector in Dallas; and Lt. Col. Wal
ter C. Swanson, operations officer
for the 8507th Reserve Group in
Austin.
The visitors arrived at Easter
wood at 8:30 a.m. and departed
after lunch with 9412th staff offi
cers.
Lt. Col. Ralph E. Miller, com
mander of the 9412th, called the
visit “a fine opportunity for our
local Air Force Reserve squadron
to display its ready-now status.”
The 9412th Air Force Reserve
Recovery Squadron staged tests of
mobility and disaster recovery last
Friday in a readiness exercise ob
served by Austin-based officers.
The 60-man unit, encamped at
Easterwood Airport here for two
weeks of active duty training, was
mobilized on orders from Col. Nor-
Inspects
Reserve
ris A. Hiett, commander of the
8507th Reserve Group in the capi
tal city.
The mobility problem tested the
9412th’s ability to abandon its Eas
terwood headquarters (as it would
if the area was under threat of at
tack) and set up operations at an
alternate site.
To test communications, the
9412’s radio section rigged a mo
bile transmitter using power from
a portable generator. When the
radio link with the group head
quarters in Austin had been estab
lished, the unit returned to Easter
wood to begin disaster practice.
