A&M’s two all-American baseballers, Frank Stark and
Lance Cobb, posted .359 and .351 batting averages, respec
tively, for the season. Both were second-team all-America
choices, Stark at first base and Cobb in the outfield.

Two Aggie baseballers completed their collegiate careers
in the College World Series at Omaha and then inked pro
pacts. Catcher Bill Hancock of Shreveport signed with
Milwaukee and was assigned to Greenville, S. C. in the Class
A Western Carolina League. Second baseman Bill Grochett
of Houston signed with the Chicago Cubs and was assigned
to Caldwell, Idaho, of the Rookie League.

It was a move upward in athletics at A&M this past
school year. The Aggies won SWC titles in basketball, base
ball and tennis doubles and had a flock of outstanding in
dividuals who won conference, regional and national honors.
In addition to Stark and Cobb, Ray Kubala made second team
all-America center on the football coaches association’s squad;
basketballer Bennie Lenox repeated as SWC player of year
and repeated on Helm’s all-America squad . . . Cager Bill
Robinette was second team academic all-America.
Shelby Metcalf closed out his basketball recruiting for
A&M with the signing of Odessa High star Terry Trippet,
who erased all of Dub Malaise’s scoring records at Odessa
last season.

Pampa, makes the U. S. Olympic team, he will not return to
school until the second semester. The Olympics will be held
in October, in Japan.

The campers’ daily schedule be-
gans with reveille at 6:30, followed
with a round of calisthenics, break
fast and a morning of classroom
lectures.
Afternoons, the youngsters,
whose ages range from 10 to 18,
entered competitive play with both
singles and doubles matches. Even
ing activities included more lec
tures, movies, dances and other
entertainment.
“In their spare time, they were
able to swim in the nearby olym-
pic-style pool at A&M,” Mabry
explained.

Thursday evening with contest
winners, most improved players
and other receiving special recog
nition.
Other staff members included
leading players, teachers and pro
fessionals, Mabry pointed out.
Working with the boys were
John Newman, Charles Tedford,
Chip Massey and Terry Oxford,
all of San Antonio; John McCabe
of Stanford University; Richard
Barker of A&M and Fred Kester,
Dallas.
Coaching the girls were Magaret
Roemer and Joy Anderson, both of
Shreveport; Jan Baldwin, Austin;
Kate Hedrick, Wheelock; Mrs. Cor-
nellia Cope, San Antonio, and Mrs.
Bartzen and Mrs. Mabry.
The participants were from Tex-
Southeastem states. They were
grouped according to age and abi
lity for competitive purposes, Ma
bry said.
