Demonstrate HA&M’s Booml Today’s multi-million dollar building: boom at A&M is staggering-, compared with the institution’s initial structure built almost 100 years ago. Old Main, the first campus facility, was completed in 1876, five years after the Texas Legislature appropriated $75,000 to pay for the dormitory-classroom combination. Two additional appropriations and hot words flowed before the structure was finally completed. Contractors caught the brunt of the Legislature because the foundation kept sinking into the “quagmire ground.” Foundation problems are more easily solved today, and A&M students moving into the new dormitories this fall will be afforded more luxuries than their predecessors. Old Main residents gathered their own wood to fire stoves in each room. They depended upon nature to supply their water needs. Rain water drained from the roofs into huge cisterns for storage, Ernest Langford, university ar chivist and professor emeritus of architecture, recalls. Approximately $4.7-million worth of dormitories will be opened in September. Heating will not be a problem; in fact the housing facilities also will be airconditioned. But Howard Badgett, physical plant director, admits that keeping up with increased electrical and water demands of the university is a struggle. New additions to the campus, including a $6-million cyclotron, soon will demand as much electricity as the uni versity currently uses. So the university’s power plant is undergoing a $2.5- million expansion. Another project soon to begin is a $l-million space center to house activation analysis and other space-related teaching and research activities. Today’s $14-million building program, either approved or under construction, will be followed in the near future with an equal amount of facilities. One perplexing problem that exists today failed to dis turb early day administrators—automobile parking. “Another good thing about the cyclotron is that cars can be parked there too,” Badgett said with a grin.
