Chandler Shows
Keys To Throne
All-SWC Baseball
Team Has 9 Ags
I
Hitting, hurling and humiliation
were parlayed into a Southwest
Conference baseball championship
by the Aggies this season.
The humiliation came first. In
their SWC opener, against TCU
in Fort Worth on March 17, the
Aggies lost a 14-7 decision as the
Frogs scored nine runs in one in
ning.
“IT WAS A long, long trip
home,” Coach Tom Chandler re
called this week. “But the boys
examined themselves and decided
they could do a lot better. They
came back the next game and beat
Texas, 5-2.”
Two non-conference wins over
Minnesota, 7-2 and 3-2, were fol
lowed by an 8-7 loss to Baylor
and at that point the Aggies were
1-2 in SWC play. Then the Aggies
settled down and won 12 straight,
10 in SWC play and they had a
two-game bulge on the field when
they went to Texas for the final
two games. The Longhorns and
Aggies play a 5-5 tie, called be
cause of darkness, and then in the
twinbill the next day Texas won
the opener, 3-2 and A&M took
the nightcap, 5-2, to clinch their
first SWC title since 1959.
CHANDLER, IN reviewing the
season, pointed to these things
for the Aggies’ success: “Great
infield defense. We knew Ballard
and Grochett had the great gloves
but Hargett’s coming through at
third base sealed the defense.”
Improvement of Hancock behind
the plate. “He was a third base-
man last year but made the big
change and came on strongly as
the season progressed.” Clutch
hitting, especially by Stark. “Stark
broke up some key games for us,
especially the final one against
Texas. Others, like Cobb, Koonce,
Hargett and Grochett came
through with key hits during the
season.” Steady hurling by Chuck
McGuire and Steve Hillhouse.
The A&M pitching staff posted
a 1.9 earned run average both for
the season and for SWC play.
For the year Hillhouse won 7 and
lost 2 and he had a 7-1 mark in
league play. McGuire was 7-3
for the year and 4-2 in SWC. John
Crain won the other league game
and he was 3-0 for the year.
“You never like to be humiliated
in a game, but I feel that TCU’s
9-run inning against us in the
SWC opener had a lot to do with
our becoming a good ball club,”
Chandler said.
To the victors go the spoils.
And with one exception that was
the way it turned out when the
Associated Press All - Southwest
Conference baseball team was re
leased Wednesday.
Conference champions A&M
placed six players on the first
team and three more on the second,
plus having pitcher Steve Hill
house voted Sophomore of the
Year.
Aggie first-teamers were first
baseman Frank Stark, second base-
men Bill Grochett, centerfielder
Lance Cobb, catcher Bill Hancock
and pitcher Hillhouse. Shortstop
Jerry Ballard made the team as
utility infielder.
Named on the second team were
third baseman George Hargett,
left felder Alan Koonce and
er Chuck McGuire.
Rounding out the first
were third baseman Jerry
Baylor; shortstop Tom
SMU; outfielder Jay
TCU; outfielder Ward S
UT; outfielder Donnie
Baylor; and Myer.
The second team looked S
this:
First base—Buddy Young,
as; second base—Ed Denman,
as; shortstop—Joel Tigett,
outfielder — Ronnie Waldo,
and Bob Bigley, TCU; ca
Butch Thompson, Texas; pi
John Porter, Baylor; and
Hartenstein, Texas.
Stark and Cobb were unai
choices along with Perkins.
