Calorie Cut Could Result
In ‘Spare Tire 9 Trimming
Hearty eaters — many with
“spare tires” at the waistline —
have just been dealt a body blow.
Their calorie quotas have been cut.
Top nutritionists of the nation
have trimmed several hundred cal
ories from the recommended daily
intake for these easy-living Amer
icans, Dr. William J. McGanity,
Canadian-born physician now liv
ing at Galveston, recently said.
He discussed the calorie cutback
with Extension home economists
attending the Human Nutrition
Workshop at A&M University.
Dr. McGanity, who is professor
and chairman of the Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology at the
University of Texas Medical
Branch, Galveston, also is a mem
ber of the National Research Coun
cil-National Academy of Sciences
Food and Nutrition Board which
announced the calorie quota cut
last Wednesday in a new publica
tion just off the press.
The council surveys eating hab
its and health needs of the nation
and sets up recommended allow
ances for vitamins and minerals,
and maximums for calories.
Alcoholic beverages were cited
as a substantial calorie contributor
to American diets by the nutrition
experts. Council members blamed
the ease of modern living for the
decreased physical activity which
calls for fewer calories.
The council is concerned because
a large segment of the adult popu
lation is overweight. Dr. McGanity
indicated that today’s average
American uses much less energy
than in 1958, when the council’s
last previous dietary report was
issued.
Before making the change, the
National Research Council took a
hard look at their “reference man”
—a 25-year-old healthy American
male weighing 145 pounds who
lives a fairly active life. They
lopped off 300 calories from his
daily diet, making it now 2,900
calories a day, compared with 3,200
in 1958.
Dr. McGanity explained that the
“reference woman,” who also is 25
but tips the scales at 128 pounds,
fared a little better. She now has
a calorie quota of 2,100 instead of
the former 2,300 daily calories.
The most drastic calorie cut
came for women in the age brack
et of 55 or over, where the new
quota is 1,600 a day. This points
to the need for wiser choices of
foods, since all must contribute vi
tal nutrients, Extension Service
foods and nutrition specialists em
phasize.
Water was termed more impor
tant than food in planning for
emergencies, giving impetus to Ex
tension’s statewide civil defense
training program now underway
for Texas families. Other civil de
fense groups are cooperating with
the disaster preparedness and sur
vival program.

THEY LAUGHED WHEN HE SAT DOWN TO PLAY
They laughed when he sat down to play ‘cause they knew
the piano stool probably wouldn’t hold his 525-pound
weikht. So Allen Teich proceeded to lose 324 pounds in 18
months. And here, in his suburban Chicago, 111., home,
Allen, now a trim 201, poses in former pants it’s a fat
chance he’ll never use again. Daughter Roni looks on. (AP
