BY JIM BUTLER AUSTIN — Darkness won a ball game here Thursday afternoon. A&M and Texas, vying for a trip to the College World Series, plated five runs each in ten in nings when the umpires decided to call the game for lack of light. The two teams play a doubleheader | Friday. The Aggies jumped to an early three run lead in the first inning against UT starter, Bob Myer. Jerry Ballard, Bill Grochett, and Alan Koonce all singled to bring in one run. Lance Cobb singled to rightfield to bring in the second run. Texas came back with three runs in the bottom of the second off A&M hurler, Steve Hillhouse. Butch Thompson walked and was followed by Ron Bandy’s double and a double by shortstop Forrest Boyd. Texas took the lead in the bot tom of the fifth with one run on two hits and a pair of A&M errors. Ed Denman started the rally with a single and went to second when the ball went through leftfielder Alan Koonce’s legs. Ed Kasper followed with a single to plate Denman with the fourth Texas Netmen Eye Semis In SWC Tourney BY MAYNARD ROGERS LUBBOCK — A determined crew of Aggie netters fought their way up the ladder in the SWC ten nis tournament here Thursday by placing two men and a doubles team in the semifinals. In the meantime Cadet linksman Mike Higgins earned a tie for fifth place in the SWC golf tourney with a 151 round on the par-141 course in the first day of compe tition. In singles net play Richard Bar ker defeated Edward Terville of Rice, 2-6, 8-6, 6-3, in the first round while Luis Rojas upended “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars Sales—Parts—Service “We Service All Foreign Cars” 1422 Texas Ave. TA 2-4517 Jacky Griffin of Baylor, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2. Ag Ricky Williams dropped his first round match to Frank Bertram of Rice, 6-3, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Barker took Beau Sutherland of Texas Tech, one of the Red Raider lead ers in last year’s tourney, 8-6, 6-3. Rojas defeated Rice netter Dale McCleary, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Barker meets Jim Parker of Rice in the semifinals Friday while Ro jas takes on Jerry Walters of Texas. In doubles play, the Aggie duo of Barker and Rojas topped Don Draper and Don Foiles of Tech in two quick matches, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round. The two Maroon netters will meet Bertram and Chip Travis of Rice in the doubles semifinals Fri day. Housty Brewer of Texas, from the same group that took the con ference team title, is leading in the golf tourney with a 146 score for 36 holes. The Aggies scored two in the top of the sixth to regain the lead. George Hargett walked, and Neil Thompson, pinch hitting for Hill- house, also walked. Shortstop Jer ry Ballard reached base on a field er’s choice. Then Bill Grochett doubled off the fence in left cen- terfield to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs. John Crain, who relieved Hill- house, shut out the Longhorns un til the ninth inning. Crain walked Ward Summers in the ninth, prompting Coach Tom Chandler to bring in southpaw Richard Beller. Beller walked the next two hitters to load the bases. Then sophomore Billy Crain came in from his right- field position to replace Beller. After getting Gene Ross on a pop up to first baseman Frank Stark, Ron Bandy singled over second base to knock in the tying run. Bandy was a thorn in the side of the Aggies all day, getting four of the twelve Texas hits. Jerry Ballard and Bill Grochett led the Aggies with three hits apiece. The game will not count on ei ther team’s record, but the indi vidual performances will be fig ured into the conference statistics. The Aggies and Texas face off at 1:30 p.m. in Austin for Friday’s two games.
