Page 6 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, May 7, 1964 Fish End Season With Shorthorns The Aggie Fish will close out their season by hosting the Texas Yearlings in a freshman baseball game at 3:00 Thursday in Travis Park. Coach Ray Hall will go with fireballing lefty Tommy Chiles on the mound. Chiles, named the high school ‘player-of-the-year” in Lou isiana last year, sports a 3-1 rec ord. The Fish will be seeking revenge for an earlier defeat at the hands of the Shorthorns in Austin, 13-7. Numerous fielding miscues and 12 walks cost the Fish heavily in the Austin contest. Shortstop Jeff Warren, from Fort Worth Arlington Heights, is the only Fish regular over .300. Rightfielder Ron Yarter from Houston Bellaire paces the team in RBI’s, while centerfielder Chuck Malitz leads the club in home runs. Malitz hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Fish will be trying to bet ter their season record of 6-5 in the Texas finale. Coach Hall pre dicts that, “If we can get a few runs and if Chiles has his control, we’ll take them.” The probable line-up for the Fish: Don Arrington, second base; 2 Ag Golfers Play In SWC Tourney By virtue of their third place conference finish, the A&M Uni versity golf team will send two players to the Southwest Confer ence golf tournament in Lubbock this week. The tourney will consist of 72 holes of medal play. 36 holes will be played on both Thursday and Friday on the Hillcrest Country Club course. Representing A&M will be Mike Higgins, a senior from Tomball, and junior Jeff Andrick from San Antonio’s Alamo Heights High School. The Aggies have annexed the individual title three of the last four years. Last year, Ag Eugene Byrd fired an even par 276 on the Fayetteville Country Club course to take the crown. “Sports Car Center’ *3 Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars Sales—Parts—Service ‘We Service All Foreign Cars”I ■1422 Texas Ave. TA 2-4517 Jamaica Shorts Cabin Boys Capris and Other Sports Wear from $2.98 Joyce's 608 S. Prep Shot King Is A&M Bound Rotan’s Howard Van Loon, who has signed a football letter-of-in tent with A&M University, fired the 12-pound shot 64’5 1 /4” over the weekend in the Red Raider Relays. The A&M-bound muscleman’s heave is the fartherest schoolboy put of the year in the nation. The previous best was 63’1%” by Jim Brannen, of Los Gatos, California. Van Loon’s throw stamps him as the second best shotputter in Texas schoolboy annals. The lead er, of course, is Pampa’s fabulous Randy Matson, now an Aggie freshman. Matson’s top schoolboy effort was 66’10%”. The burly weightman stands 6’1” and weighs a solid 235 pounds. Van Loon was recruited earlier in the year as a tackle by Ag Head Football Coach Hank Foldberg. His junior year saw Van Loon make first team Class A all-state for Rotan. The young West Texas giant at tributes his success in the shot this year to an accelerated weight program, which has enabled him to press 265 pounds. He was 1963 Class A state champ in both the shot and discus. FROM THE ined By JIM BUTLER Yiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiyi! It’s World Series time down on the reservation and the Redmen are putting - on the show. According to The Battalion Ouija Board (no relation to the publications board or board of directors), the annual fall horsehide derby will be between the Milwaukee Braves and Cleveland Indians. Hill Rise and Northern Dancer will both finish in the second division. Geronimo will draw five votes for most valuable player but will lose out to Hank Aaron in the senior circuit and John “Sitting Bull” Romano in the junior league (not to be confused with League of Women Voters). The New York Mets will outdraw every team, but the Yankees will overtake the Clowns on the last day of the season by putting Cassius Clay in centerfield replacing an injured Phil Linz replacing an injured Hector Lopez replac ing an injured Mickey What-is-his-name. Roger Craig will win 33 games and the Cy Young Award. Cochise will lead the world in scalps with 49 and place second in stolen wigwams with 5. The Dodgers and Yankees will share the World Series Wampum with clutch baseball in the late August afternoons for second place in a runaway. The Colts will clinch last place by the Fourth of July and the domed stadium will be used exclusively for rodeos and ping pong tournaments. The White Sox will be forced to wear a black sock on their left foot by the NAACP. P. T. Barnum Finley will be forced to trade the Athletics for seven books of green stamps and nine sun lamps for “Pennant Porch.” After the Cincinnati Reds survive an extensive investi gation by the House Un-American Activities Committee, they will change their name to the Red, White and Blues (Dixie style). The Washington Senators will trade Lyndon Johnson for a further right-hander and George Wallace will offer Birmingham as the future site of the San Francisco Mayses. Warren Giles will turn down the University of Houston’s application for the National League, saying they should play with the smaller teams, like the American League. Finley will be chosen Most Popular Owner; Walter Alston will be the first choice of Philadelphia in the next player pool; and Casey Stengel will wear drawers with the Mets’ insignia, crossed bats over a turnstile.
