Ags Back In Front By JIM BUTLER Associate Editor There’s an unwritten rule in baseball that says when you play a team that looks asleep, don’t rock the cradle! When Rice took infield practice with dropping eyelids Tuesday aft ernoon, the Aggies nodded know ingly, greased up their bats and sang a lullaby to the tune of 12 hits and an 11-4 Southwest Con ference victory. The Owls added five errors to the worthy cause of A&M’s 10th consecutive win, a victory that put the Cadets back in sole possession of first place in the loop race. Coach Tom Chandler’s crew hit a couple of sour notes in their tune ELECT JOEL HOGAN Pd. Pol. Adv. Main TA 2-0146 that awakened the Owls for a four- -run burst in the fifth inning. But John Crain relieved starter Steve Hillhouse in the sixth, calming Rice bats for the final four frames. Rice’s James King, who came close to beating the Aggies last Friday, lasted only one and a third innings, leaving the Owls under a seven-run blanket. The scoring started when Bill Grochett and Allen Koonce re ceived free tickets to first base and scored on Bill Hancock’s long double to centerfield. Billy Crain reached first on an error and Frank Stark banged a triple to deep left center for two more runs. Singles by Jerry Ballard, Koonce and Hillhouse, plus three Rice mis- cues added three more tallies to the cushion in the second inning. George Hargett’s single, a sin gle by Ballard and another Owl bobble brought in the eighth score in the third frame. Rice picked up a pair of hits in the second and fourth before in digestion on Hillhouse’s curve caused them to burp up four runs in the fifth. Wayne McClelland’s triple, a pair of walks and an Ag- error accounted for the first two runs. Gene Fleming and Donnie Longcope singled to bring in two more. Stark stroked a two-run home run in the seventh and Hancock tripled across a run in the eighth to end the scoring. Hey Aggies!!
