Matson Has Made
His Biggest Mark
By MAYNARD ROGERS
Young Randy Matson has a long
record of feats of strength that
dates way back to last summer and
makes some people in the shot put
ring look like 90-pound weaklings.
Matson’s claim to fame was at
the National Track and Field Fed
eration Championships in Houston
last June. Randy won the meet
with a throw of 60-6, becoming the
first Texan in history to break
the distance barrier.
Since then, the 19-year-old
Randy, Danny
Win In Meet
Fantastic Randy Matson
paced a field of Aggie weight
men at the Drake Relays Friday
and Saturday in Des Moines,
Iowa, with a 64-1 toss of the
shot put to set a national fresh
man record.
Danny Roberts, the other half
of the Aggie weight duo,
notched a second place in the
university-college shot put with
a throw of 59-214 behind Frank
Mazza of Baylor who posted a
59-1014 effort.
Roberts also finished third in
the discus with a throw of 167-
6y 2 .
Pampa star has moved on up the
ladder of success with so much
progress that one wonders if the
6-6 youngster has a ceiling. From
that first long toss Matson has
reached the ultimate in the nation’s
freshman shot put ranks, and now
holds a national record.
Randy’s record came Saturday at
the Drake Relays in Des Moines,
Iowa. It was a monsterous heave
of 64-1.
The mark broke the national
freshman standard of 63-7 set by
Dallas Long, current world record
holder, in 1959. The throw was
also the fifth best toss of all time
by any athlete in the world.
Coach Charlie Thomas, the non
chalant Aggie cinder mentor,
thinks highly of Matson’s progress.
“I think it’s great. I thought he
could hit 64 feet because he had
been improving every week. Last
week in practice he had over 20
throws past 60 feet. I believe one
of these days he will break the
world record,” Thomas observed.
Matson, however, did not realize
he could produce such a throw at
the Drake meet.
“I didn’t expect it. I was hoping
to break 63-7 though. It was just
one of those throws where every
thing was just right,” he said.
Master Matson must be doing
everything right these days.

Aggie Netters, Golfers Remain
In Contention With Clutch Wins
The A&M golf and tennis teams
shut out their respective opponents
over the weekend to tenaciously
remain in mathematical conten
tion for the Southwest Conference
championship in each sport.
With backs to the wall, the Ag
golfers swarmed the Rice Owls,
6-0, on the A&M course Saturday.
The Aggies were paced by Jeff
Andrick and Mike Higgins who
both fired subpar rounds. The win
over the Owls moved the Ags into
third place with a 22-14 record.
Results of the Rice match were
as follows:
Mike Higgins (A&M) def. Jack
Creel (Rice), 5 and 4; Jeff Andrick
