Spring has passed its prime and summer is coming on
like Aggies charging to taverns, and with this meteorological
change at Aggieland comes something that could be the
ninth wonder of A&M history—a^ second Southwest Con
ference title in one year.
Last crown the Maroon nabbed was in basketball this
past winter, which was the first in 41 years for the cagers
and the first major title A&M has earned since 1959 when
the baseball team took the honors. “
Now, Coach Tom Chandler’s men are back on top
shuffling along with a 14-5 season record and 7-2 conference
mark. Hot after the Aggies with 6-2 league records each
are the Texas Longhorns and Baylor Bears. Both are eyeing
the big Maroon like Gaseous Ali looks to Mecca, and both
teams get two more chances at the Aggies.
Some thought has been given to the reason why the
Aggie nine is coming on so strong in the middle of the race,
winning its last eight starts after losing two wild ones to
TCU and Baylor.
Well, maybe it’s because the baseball team wants to
keep the idea of winning at A&M. They want to take up
where the basketball team left off.
But there is one thing that Coach Shelby Metcalf and
his court men had that Coach Chandler and his crew have
not yet acquired—a solid backing from the student body.
v Oh, now that the word has

gotten around, there is some
talk on campus about the pos
sibilities of another champion
ship. But talk isn’t enough,
and any one of the basketball
players can vouch for that. It
takes some action over at Tra
vis Park.
The Aggies have six more
games on the schedule with
the next four on home
grounds. The action can start
Friday and Saturday when
A&M meet the Rice Owls be
fore it goes into the final leg
of the race.
From there, the Aggies host
Baylor next weekend, and then
travel to the bewitched Clark
Field in Austin for a final
series with Texas. So, it’s go
ing to take help from every
one from here on out.
