Another big test will face the
Aggies as they try to hold on to
their Southwest Conference base
ball lead when they meet the Rice
Owls in a two-game series at Bry
an’s Travis Park Friday and Sat
urday.
Due to the Bryan Broncos play
ing Killeen Friday at 6 p.m. on the
same field, Friday’s tilt will start
at 8 p.m. The Saturday contest is
slated for 2 p.m.

Aggie Bats Mean
Mighty Numbers
Mighty bats have rung up big
numbers for the Aggies in 19 sea
son games and nine Southwest
Conference tilts.
A&M tops all its opponents,
league and non league, in every
batting department except home
runs, which they are tied in con
ference play. Aggie record is 14-5
and 7-2.
Eight players on the Aggie
squad are hitting past the .300
mark in league competition with
sophomore Lance Cobb in front of
the pack with a .500 average. An
other sophomore, Alan Koonce,
follows Cobb at .400 while Fred
Carlton is next posts a .375. Bill
Hancock and George Hargett are
close behind with .367 each.
As a team, the Cadets are hit
ting at a commendable .292 for the
conference and .266 for the season.
Cobb also leads the team in con
ference hits with 16, doubles with
six and total bases with 28. He is
tied with Bill Grochett in runs
with nine and with Koonce in home
runs with two.
Another Cager
Chooses A&M
The Aggies added a towering
center to their list of basketball
reci-uits this week.
Aggie Coach Shelby Metcalf
signed Larry Ditto, 6-8 center,
who was a standout for the Breck-
enridge Buckaroo club this past
season.
“He’ll be our freshman center
next season and we’re expecting
great things of him when he joins
the Aggie varsity,” Metcalf de
clared.
Ditto scored 280 points in 19
games this past season for a 20.0-
point average. His high was 32
against Abilene High and his low
was 10 against Brownwood.
He was two-time all-district and
was an all-tourney selection in the
Bi'ownwood meet.
Coached by Doyle Reynolds, Dit
to was the top Buckaroo rebounder
and was terrific on defense.
THE AGGIES NOW sit on top
of the league with a 7-2 mark,
just ahead of the Texas Longhorns
and the Baylor Bears who each
hold 6-2 records.
The Owls have latched on to the
cellar bottom with a 1-7 record.
Coach Tom Chandler will post
the lineup and batting order for
the Friday game consisting of
Jerry Ballard, shortstop; Bill
Grochett, second base; Alan
Koonce, leftfield; Bill Hancock,
catcher; Lance Cobb, centerfield;
Billy Crain, rightfield; Frank
Stark, first base; George Hargett
third base.
CHANDLER SAID senior Chucl
McGuire or sophomore Billy Craii
will open on the mound for the
Aggies in the first game of th<
series.
Steve Hillhouse, the winningesl
of Aggie hurlers, is scheduled tc
open in the Saturday match.
IF McGUIRE GETS the starting
nod Friday, he will be matching
his 2-1 conference record against
either Wayne McClellend or Tex
Spear of the Owls. Hillhouse will
toe the slab with a 4-2 mark to
his credit.
In other conference play over
the weekend Texas hosts Southern
Methodist in Austin for two, and
Baylor meets Texas Christian in
Bear grounds.
Chandler was asked if the Ag
gies could expect some help from
SMU and TCU with wins over the
Longhorns and the Bears.
“We don’t worry about anyone
else in the Southwest Conference,”
the diamond mentor said. “We
play ’em one at a time.”

Defeated By Baylor
The Baylor Bears all but elimi
nated the A&M golf team from
the Southwest Conference picture
Tuesday with a rainsoaked 4-2
pasting of the Cadets at Waco’s
Ridgewood Country Club.
The only bright spot for the Ag
gies was a four under par 66 shot
by Mike Higgins which enabled
him to defeat Baylor’s Joe Pat
Rickett 5-4. For A&M’s only other
point, the Higgins-Jeff Andrick
team defeated the Bears’ Rickett-
Jim Grant team 4-3.
