ind it strangely quiet when A&M
osts the University of Texas to
cricket match April 11.
The tone for the game was set
n the printed invitations for the
;ame.
“The cricket club requests the
^ jleasure of your company at an
■xhibition match which will begin
at 10:45 a.m. and should finish
Juring the afternoon . . the in
vitations read.
THE GAME, scheduled for the
drill field across from the Me
morial Student Center, will be ex
plained over a public address sys
tem by Griffiths.
Griffiths explained that cricket
is a contest between the bowler
and the batsman. The batsman at
tempts to keep the bowled ball
from striking his wicket, stakes
set into the ground 22 yards from
the bowler.
ELEVEN MEN form a team
and there is a batsman located
ll ul both to the front and rear of the
bowler. Runs are scored on the
basis of how far the batsman
Texas ij knocks the small ball. There are

1) Cricket is played between
two teams, each of 11 men.
2) At any time during play
there are on the field
(a) 2 men of the batting side
(b) 11 men of the fielding
side
(c) 2 umpires (in white
coats).
3) The batting side must de
fend the two wickets (each of 3
stumps) which are 22 yards apart.
In other words the 2 batsmen must
not allow these wickets to be hit
by the ball.
4) A team is dismissed when 10
men are out since the 1 man left
is unable to defend both wickets.
When the 10 men are out this al
ways completes the innings al
though the batting captain may
declare the innings terminated at
any time.
5) A run is made every time
the batsmen change ends; that is,
run from one wicket to the other.
Note—if a ball is hit over the
boundary without touching the
ground it scores 6 runs; if it has
touched the ground first it counts
4 runs. The ball does not have to
be hit in order for runs to be made.
6) The aim is to score more
runs in the innings than your op
ponents. Note—in matches sched
uled for one day only one inning is
played per team.
7) A batsman can be out
(a) caught (off a fly ball)
(b) bowled (ball hits wicket)
(c) run out [failed to make
base (wicket)]
(d) stumped (catcher puts
down wicket while batsman
off base)
(e) leg before wicket ball
(ball prevented from hitting
the wicket by the batsman’s
body and NOT the bat)
(f) hit wicket (batsman
knocks down his own wick
et)
8) A bowler (pitcher) must de
liver the ball with his arm straight
and he can only deliver 6 balls
(fouls excluded) in succession—
this constitutes an over.
After the over another bowler
is used from the other end, this
necessitates all the fielders chang
ing positions.
Note—no bowler may bowl two
consecutive overs.
9) The score is expressed as so
many runs for so many wickets;
that is, the number of runs scored
and how many players have been
dismissed.

Colt’s Hurler
Loses Battle
With Cancer
HOUSTON (A>)_Jim Umbricht,
big right-handed relief pitcher for
the Houston Colts, died Wednes
day after battling a rapidly
spreading cancer for a month.
Umbricht, 33, had made a re
markable comeback with a 4-3
record with the Colts last season
despite having undergone cancer
surgery just a month before the
season started.
He was one of the National
League’s leading relief pitchers
the second half of the 1963 season,
pitching 76 innings in 35 games
and compiling a 2.61 earned run
average. >
Umbricht was in uniform on
opening day last season although
doctors were not certain the groin
and leg surgery had done a com
plete job of removing the cancer
ous growth.
The disease began to appear in
the chest area last December but
Umbricht and Colt officials kept
the development a closely guarded
secret.
Cremation will follow the Fri
day afternoon funeral services.
