THE BATTALION Pag-e 2 College Station, Texas Thursday, February 13, 1964 CADET SLOUCH BATTALION EDITORIALS by Jim Earle Why No RE Week? Just why has Religious Emphasis Week on the A&M University campus dried up on the vine? The lack of co-operation might be considered as a major factor. It appears that a number of groups have simply squirmed from under their RE Week obligations. We found ourselves inclined to agree with the decision of the administration to discontinue RE services during regular hours last year. It was very evident that the campus coffee shops attracted far more students than did the services. However, it appears that the University was having nothing to do with the planning for RE Week this year— save allowing Cadets an excuse from CQ. We feel that this was negligence on the part of University officials. The University should be as enthusiastic about RE Week as they would be about SCONA, Space Fiesta or any other program that might enrich the life of any group of students. We can’t help but feel that the local church groups, under the direction of the Campus Religious Workers Associ ation, lacked either complete co-operation or co-ordination. We would prefer to think that it was co-ordination missing. We would encourage the University officialdom to return to an active position in the planning of RE Week. They should not be persuaded by any decision of our higher courts regarding prayer to let RE Week become something of the past. The student chaplains and the YMCA should be allowed to be the University’s representatives in the planning of RE Week with local religious groups. The University representatives should be backed by the University. The University should lend support to this program as strongly as they would any other. This would include scheduling and reserving space on the University calendar and in University facilities. We cannot be happy with just one local church conducting A&M University’s Religious Emphasis Week—even though we commend them for their service to students. The University should have a sizable contribution for the week or not even schedule RE Week on the calendar. We would prefer a strong, inspirational A&M University Religious Emphasis Week. In an attempt to alleviate this situation, Asst. Secretary of Defense Arthur Sylvester an nounced that the tour of duty at Guantanamo will be reduced to one year instead of two. Many veterans of the Navy and Marine Corps can probably recall with bitter memories their two years of duty at “Gitmo.” True the Navy did their best to provide the single men with en tertainment and recreational act ivities, but many can recall that one can shoot skeet, play acey-ducy, ride horses, watch movies and make model airplanes for only so long. Many were the luckless sailors and marines who passed two con secutive seasons of hot, sweaty and sleepless nights with noth ing to look forward in the mor row but blazing sun and the de pressing sight of the dry and parched hills surrounding the base. There are of course tours of duty, but certainly “Git mo” has earned its reputation of being one of the least desirable postings in the Navy. “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars Sales— Parts—Service ■ ‘‘We Service All Foreign Cars' ■1422 Texas Ave. TA 2-4511 Thursday, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14 No Movie Space Fiesta SATURDAY ‘THE BRAVADOS’ SATURDAY NIGHT Preview Also SUNDAY “THAT TOUCH OF MINK” An Engineering CAREER With FISHER GOVERNOR COMPANY Interviews will be held on February 25, 1964 on the campus.
