Carelessness Breeds Death Careless, inattentive driving is one of the major causes of highway accidents. This is a passenger’s view of a traffic fatality. Don’t you be an eye witness also. “Most people wouldn’t allow themselves to be placed in a black box with a one-foot peephole and then be propelled along at speeds of 60-70 miles per hour,” Charles J. Keese, director of the Texas Transportation Institute said. “Yet, people do this when they get into their car on a cold day and just scrape away a handful of ice or snow. Keese further stated that while there is little snow here, most Aggies will encounter some during the holidays. “Drivers tend to adjust to bad weather,” Keese said, “but only after the first 50 miles. It’s at the outset of bad weather that most accidents occur which have as their cause adverse weather conditions.” In a 1962 survey of 10,000 ac cidents occuring over 54 miles of freeways, the institute found that of all the reasons causing the mishaps sight-distance relation ship was the greatest cause. “A driver should not overdrive his visibility,” said Keese. “He should keep in mind how far and how much he can see and adjust his speed and reactions according- ly. This is the main thing a driver should remember. I can’t repeat this statement enough. The failure of a driver to stay within his range of visibility is one of the biggest problems drivers are faced with.” Seat Belts Can Save Lives The National Safety Council says that one third of all serious injury in automobile accidents could be prevented if only the victims had installed and used seat belts.
