The five-day U. S. Weather Bu reau forecasts for Texas, Thurs day through Monday, are as fol lows: Northeastern and north central Texas, temperatures will average two to 10 degrees below normal. The normal high for this region is 46 degrees to 56 degrees and the normal low is 24 degrees in the northwest portion to 38 de grees in the south. Continued cold is expected with a warming trend over the weekend, and precipita tion will amount to little or none. In northwestern Texas, tempera- “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars Sales—Parts—Service I “We Service All Foreign Cars”I ■ ■, ■1422 Texas Ave. TA 2-4517; I tures will average near normal in the western portion and will go down to two to nine degrees below normal in the eastern part of this section. The normal high for the northwest is 45 degrees, while the normal high for the south is 56 degrees. The low is usually 20 in the northwest and 34 in the south. Here, too, there is a slow warming trend with little or no precipita tion, the weather bureau reports. Most of southern Texas can ex pect tempeartures to be four to six degrees below normal. Precipi tation will be light to moderate over the south and eastern por tions. Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico all will have temperatures ranging from seasonal normal to above seasonal normal. Wyoming and Colorado both have light snow flurries pre dicted over the weekend while Ari zona and New Mexico expect little or no precipitation. Georgia, Louisiana, the southern half of Mississippi, coastal Ala bama, and the extreme northwest Florida, have no precipitation ex pected, but temperatures will be eight to 12 degrees below normal. DPS Reports On Highways Planning to use Highway 21 Friday to go to Austin or points East? How about you who are going north towards the Dallas- Fort Worth area? Going to use Highway 6? And those who live in Houston or south Texas. Are you going to travel Highway 6 also? If you are going to take either of these highways you might want to think twice before you lead-foot the accelerator or drive recklessly. At least four travel ers on these roads this year, if they could have the chance to day, would wish they had. According to data obtained from the Bryan office of the Highway Patrol, for the five- county area around Bryan, four people have lost their lives so far this year on these highways. In comparison with the other two routes. Highway 21 between Bryan and Austin has had a greater proportion of minor ac cidents. On this highway, traffic accidents have claimed three lives. Of the three routes. Highway 6 north from Bryan has had the second greatest amount of acci dents. One fatality has occurred on this highway this year. In Brazos County the rural roads and highways have been the scene of four accidents that have taken a toll of eight lives. Ambulance Driver Advises Aggies On Care Of Injured BY MIKE ODOM Special Writer You are driving along a desert ed farmroad late at night and you come upon an accident. A person is lying alongside the road and is seriously injured. What do you do ? “Get help is the first thing a person should do in a situation like this,” said Raymond Jones, of Cal laway-Jones Ambulance Service. The next step would be to inform the police of the wreck, he added. If someone else has gone to sum mon help, then try to make the victim as comfortable as possible and administer first aid if you know how. Jones stated that injured people shouldn’t be moved by an un trained person unless the situation demands it, such as a person being trapped under a piece of metal. He stressed that the victim should not be taken to a hospital by pass- er-bys because of the possibility of further injury through improper handling of the victim and the fact that a person who does take an injured person to the hospital is highly excited and may cause an accident himself. ANOTHER THING that Jones felt would be of benefit would be for the first person on the scene to erect markers or signals of some sort so that approaching motorists would be warned of the wreck before they got right on top of it. Dr. J. W. Martin, president of the Brazos-Robinson County Med ical Society, also said that injured people should be moved only by trained personnel. He added that many back injuries are complicat ed by improper moving of the ac cident victim. THE TWO MAIN THINGS that passer-bys should check for in an injured person are bleeding and breathing problems, advised Mar tin. He also stated that an acci dent victim should be made u comfortable as possible and be laid flat on the ground until help ar rived. Another thing that Martin felt people should avoid doing is straightening out twisted or bent limbs. He said that often nerves or arteries are exposed to the jag. ged ends of broken bones and care must be exercised so that these arteries and nerves are not sev ered. “Remember, someone has to dis- cover tomorrow’s accidents. It can easily be you,” he said. Mechanical Check Reduces Accidents Why let an automobile’s me chanical failure inconvenience you, or even cause an accident, when a simple “self-safety-check” would reveal exact vehicle condition ? “Neglect of the automobile, es pecially before long trips, often causes major breakdowns that are time consuming and money con suming,” warned F. C. Pachall, service manager of a local motor company, this week. A MEMiY CHRISTMAS Aloltday (Huyi! Edwards Coffee Enriched Flour Cling Peaches Cranberry Sauce All Grinds. Full Flavor cup after cup. Along the same line, the braking system should have enough fluid and not pull to one side or the other when the brakes are applied, Pachall said. A safe trip is something ended when you forget to c h e c k the steering system. A “hand-check” to see that all parts are tight is good insurance, he said. Failure of your car’s cooling sys tem to operate properly isn’t es pecially dangerous to life, but could cause considerable incon venience and discomfort, Pachall added. “Check all hoses for breaks and make sure all hose connec tions are sealed; in addition, check the fan belt for breaks and proper tension, and the pressure cap,” he said. As everyone knows, a safety check is of little benefit to the careless driver; all rules of thf road must be kept for maximum safety security, said Pachall. Should trouble occur, some type of trouble light, a fire extinguish er, and a first aid kit are items needed most and of great value, concluded Pachall.
