A&M fans received a first-hand glimpse two weeks ago of the team that may very well wind up in the Cotton Bowl Baylor completely devastated a “flat” Aggie team, 34-7. The Baptists came back last week to duplicate their frantic bowl-ward antics in smashing strong TCU, 32-13. Baylor Coach John Bridgers was two years old when the Bears last reigned over the conference. That makes a 39-year drought for Waco partisans. Spirit at the Central Texas bastian is so high that students have been in line since Saturday night waiting for tickets for the Texas game. Rumors have it that tickets are bringing $75 apiece for the crucial contest. So the SWC Bowl gets its third engagement of the season when the title-hungry Bears pad into Austin’s Memorial Stadium to meet Texas, the bestest with the mostest. Pre-season prognosticators had the SWC Bowl scheduled for Oct. 19 in Little Rock. The Longhorns eased out a 17-13 win over Arkansas and the date was set back a week. Rice flew up to Austin to keep the date but left with a 10-6 defeat. The Owls gained 216 yards passing against the Steers while SMU passed for two touchdowns in losing to Texas 17-12 last week. And Rice and SMU don’t have Don Trull and Larry Elkins. Texas’ pass defense is far from outstanding and whether or not Darrel Royal can correct this fault will probably determine the outcome of the game. Won’t Texas “red-dog” Trull too much? The Longhorns may try, but Trull is too smart a quarter back. He can sense when a heavy rush is coming and will use the tight end in a short pass over the vacated middle to combat the rush. Trull gets rid of the ball quick and can also run as he did against TCU for three touchdowns. This is THE game for Baylor while Texas has already had three big games plus a tough one in Dallas last week. BAYLOR 28, TEXAS 17. Sports Editor Rebounding in precision - like manner from their opening game defeat, the Aggie Fish have ral lied to conquer two opponents and hope to extend the string to three tonight as they take on the once- beaten Rice Owlets in Houston. Coach Allen Davis’ Owlets have also put together two consecutive victories after an opening game loss to the Colts of SMU in Dallas. The Fish bowed to the TCU Wogs in the opener, 10-0, but have since chalked up 27-20 and 6-0 scores over potent Baylor and Texas Tech respectively. Meanwhile, the Owl ets dumped Texas, 31-7, and eked out a win over Tech, 15-7. The margin of victory by the two squads over Tech seem to indicate a close game in the making. RICE WILL ENTER the game with a 27-man roster compared to the huge 68-man roster fielded by the Aggies. The Owlets will be hoping for the return of its fine tailback, Chuck Latourette who has been out of the lineup with a broken hand. Fullback Arnold Hebert of Houston Kinkaid who has also been on the injured list will get a chance to suit up though it is doubtful that he will play. Topping the list of running threats is L. V. Benningfield of Goldthwaite who has crossed the goal line three times. Garry Em- rick, the big fullback from Pharr leads the club in rushing and is considered tough to stop. OPENING AT THE quarterback slot will be Larry Doolen of Sweeny. He will probably alter nate with Gordon Nicholson and Dennis Gann. Nicholson is a top defensive star as well as an offen sive leader. Gann has been start ing in the tailback slot while La tourette has been out. Outstanding line duties have been performed by Guard Dick La- gew of Dallas, center Jim Swan son of Navasota, and tackle Virgil Phelps of Fort Worth. Meanwhile, the Fish offensive machine will be highlighted by the dazzling running of backs Joe Weiss and Sammy Ray. Weiss has carried the ball 19 times and has Starting Lineups/ A&M FISH John Poss 195 LE RICE OWLETS James Doyle Henry Coomes 225 LT Charles Whatley Steve Brin 202 LG Pat' Smith Gary Kovar 195 C Jim Swanson Emil Farr 190 RG Dick Lagew Jim Wickerham 210 RT Virgil Phelps Jerry Cox 190 RE Mike Wood John Worst 160 QB Larry Doolen Sammy Ray 175 LH L. Westerfield has a 4.5 average with 59 yards gained in 13 runs. In the aerial exploits, Harry Ledbetter leads with 8 completions in 13 tries, covering 89 yards. On the receiving end is Jerry Cox who has caught three for 46 yards and a Fish touchdown. Ronnie Lind sey has come down with four for 33 yards. The Fish have rolled up 614 to tal yards rushing in the three games for an average of 208 yards. Total passing yardage has ac counted for 184 while 430 yards have been made on the ground.
