T ( OR OP m E (ITS AT UR’ ^S” hulz BO FISH ALSO SUFFER? Marine Fishes Specialist Aids Arthritis Research An Aggie researcher whose spe- tiality is large marine fishes has teamed up in a basic research project with medical researchers studying rhematoid arthritis, a painful and incurable disease. Learning everything possible ibout the biochemistry complex in the vertebra or joints of the fishes found in the Gulf of Mexico is the goal, Norman Vick explains. He is a member of the Department of Oceanography and Meteorology research staff. The medical researchers are members of the University of Ala bama Medical Center’s Division of Rheumatology, a national center for the study of rheumatism and arthritis. Dr. Howard L. Holley directs the division, which has financial support from the National Institute of Health. THE BASIC research may lead to clues of benefit to human beings, Vick learned during recent con ferences with the Alabama scient ists. “We can contribute to the medi cal field, as well as learn some thing about the migratory species through this new cooperative stu dy,” Vick said. The researcher has devoted more than five years to studies of the large fishes found in the Gulf of Mexico and North Atlantic. His interest centers upon two major factors: the biochemical relation ships to environment and the mi gratory habits of these big “ani mals,” as Vick calls them. PRELIMINARY conslusions from the cooperative study should be available late next spring, Vick believes. Attention is centered upon the, small amount of fluid, especially hydraluronic acid, found in the spinal joints of the large speci mens of marlin, sailfish and com parable fishes. This fluid is the same as that found in the synovial cavities of a human, Vick explained. PERSONS SUFFERING from rheumatoid arthritis lack this fluid, or it may be present in a degenerate state. Do large marine fishes ever suf fer from arthritis ? “We can’t tell positively, but if they do they probably die quickly due to the rugged competition for life in the sea,” Vick said. There is “some possibility” that the fishes regenerate the fluid, something the human body cannot do. THE BATTALION Thursday, October 17, 1963 College Station, Texas Page 3 Business Is Good At Business School Business is business and for the School of Business Administration, business is good. Modernization currently underway in the school of business will affect a great many students. “One out of every seven students is a business mapor,” said Dr. John E. Pearson, head of the school. Besides increased enrollment and major curriculum changes in the school, its campus organizations are also displaying the new look. Two new organizations have been formed, along with a committee headed by R. L. Elkins, associate professor of business administra tion, to promote better co-ordi nation among the five existing societies. The Management Society and Finance Society are the newcomers to campus life. Both are still in the organizational stage, having presently drawn up by-laws for approval by their memberships. THE PURPOSE of the five busi ness clubs is to bring their student members closer to their particular chosen fields. Elkins said that each club will try to arrange to have a top level executive speak at the campus each semester. Elkins and W. C. House, assist ant professor of business adminis tration, co-sponsor the Manage ment Society and R. T. Cherry, assistant professor of business ad ministration, are sponsors the Fi nance Society. Allen Lawrence, Jr. and George Nelson, respectively, were elected student presidents of the two new societies. The Management Society, Fi nance Society, Accounting Society, Marketing Society, and Insurance Society are the existing student business organizations. Several of the societies hope to join national organizations, and Elkins, with the Management Society having the most definite plans towards this end at present. “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars Sales—Parts—Service We Service All Foreign Cars” 422 Texas Ave. TA 2-4517 w WE KEEP PRICES DOWN 25TH ANNUAL TEXAS PRODUCTS SALE! 20 BIG FREE PRIZES JUST REGISTER!
