Cardinals’ Keane Wins Honor As ‘Manager Of Year’ In NL HOUSTON — “The only thing that could have made me happier would have been winning the pennant,” said Johnny Keane while talking about his selection as National League Manager-of- Year for 1963 and the prospects of his St. Louis Cardinals for next Keane, who never played major league baseball, made a runaway of the annual Associated press poll Wednesday by collecting 53 of the 71 votes cast by baseball writers. “THIS IS really great,” Keane said when told he had received more than three times the num ber of votes collected by Walter Alston, pilot of the champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Alston was named on 15 ballots and Bobby Bragan of Milwaukee on the re maining three. Pre-season forecasts had in dicated Keane did not have a contender for his second full sea son as a major league manager. However, with only two weeks re maining in the campaign the Cards were only one game behind the Dodgers. KEANE, 51, chatted about the 1963 season—and 1964—while en joying a favorite pastime—playing catch with a plastic baseball with his grandchildren, Kelly, 2, and Johnny Keane Masterson, 3. His thoughts centered on Dodg er pitchers and on Stan Musial, the Cardinal great, who decided to make 1963 his final season. Keane knows how it feels to be tormented by the Dodger pitching staff that took four straight from the New York Yankees.
