THE BATTALION
NEXT STOP—GERMANY
Seagoing Aggies Sail From
Emerald Isle With High Tide
A&M’s seagoing cadets have
sailed with the high tide from Ire
land and are headed for the Port
of Bremen in Germany.
That’s the word from Capt. Ben
nett M. Dodson, superintendent of
the Texas Maritime Academy, who
spent 14 days at sea with the Ag
gies.
Dodson left the ship in Dublin
and returned (by airplane) to Col
lege Station to map plans for an
other school year for the budding
maritime officers.
THEY WILL MOVE from the
main campus here to the new TMA
headquarters on Galveston Island
at historic old Fort Crockett. The
academy is now one-year-old.
Dodson, a retired U. S. Navy
captain, had nothing but praise for
the 20 Texas cadets during the
first lap of a summer cruise.
“1 am pleased to report that the
cadets are in fine spirits and in
splendid standing with officers of
Empire State ship,” he said on his
arrival here.
The Texans are actually
“guests” of the New York Mari
time College. They are aboard a
former Navy transport, which the
New Yorkers now call the “Empire
State IV.”
As “guests” however, the Tex
ans scrub decks, scramble for boat
lowering drills and 'assist with oth
er seafaring chores during the 12-
weeks at sea.
BEFORE THE ship departed
New York, training had started.
For five days, the students from
both maritime schools participated
in boat drills.
“It was the first time some of
the Texas lads had ever had an
oar in their hands,” Dodson said
with a grin.
A week later, the ship moved
out Long Island Sound, into the
Atlantic for “some extra drills and
sea trials.” After 24-hours at sea,
the ship re-entered New York har
bor and proceeded up the Hudson
River past West Point to Albany.
Following receptions there, the
cadets headed for the Atlantic. The
first two nights were slightly rainy
but weather and sea were smooth.
No seasickness was reported.
During the next week, 44 boat
lowerings were made, Dodson re
called. The boats were lowered ii-
to the water while the ship cot
tinned at slow speed. The lot
rowers had to keep pace.
FINALLY, AFTER 14 daysti
smooth sailing, the ship enterd
the Irish Sea and proceeded
Dublin, where President Kennedt
had stirred the Irishmen a If
days before.
