A&M Committee Releases
Teacher Education Bulletin
A new 45-page bulletin has been
prepared by the A&M Council on
Teacher Education to outline the
college-wide scope of teacher edu
cation programs.
The booklet gives details of ac
credited programs leading to pro
visional certificates in 16 teaching
fields, professional certificates in
11 teaching fields and seven areas
of administration and special
services.
Dr. Chris H. Groneman is chair
man of the Council on Teacher
Education.
A&M has 39 faculty members
in teacher education depai'tments,
and in 1961 produced 5.5 percent
of the male teacher education
graduates in Texas at the bachelor
degree level. Only two other insti
tutions exceeded this figure.
“At the national level, the 68
land-grant institutions in 1959
graduated 20 percent of the bache
lor's degrees in education, 30 per
cent of the master’s degrees in
education and 70 percent of the
doctoral degrees in education,” the
bulletin states.
Dr. John Rees Christiansen,
associate professor of sociology at
Utah’s Brigham Young University,
is spending a year’s sabbatical
leave at A&M as a teacher and
researcher.
He replaces Dr. Bardin Nelson,
professor in the A&M Department
of Agricultural Economics* and
Sociology, who is on leave in Syria.
Christiansen, widely known in
the sociological world, has written
numerous journal articles, bulle
tins, and has contributed to socio
logical textbooks.
The professor was born in Utah
and received BS and MS degrees
in sociology in 1949 and 1952 at
Utah Stgte University. His doctor
ate came in 1955 at the University
of Wisconsin.

Two Hawaiian Boy Scouts, have
volunteered a helping hand to two
A&M scientists studying the chem
ical composition of nucleic acids
of cultivated and wild species of
cotton.
The Scouts have consented to
gather tomentosum seed for the
scientists as a community project
with no expense. They ask in re
turn the purpose of the scientists’
work, so that they may better
understand why the seed is being
collected.
According to Dr. David W. Ros-
berg, head of the Department of
Plant Sciences, the scientists need
about 2 pounds of seed from a wild
species of cotton, G. tomentosum,
which is found only in Hawaii. The
scientists wrote George M. Yamane,
superintendent, Experimental De
partment, Dole Corporation, Lanai
City, Hawaii, for information!
the feasibility of obtaining:
much seed.
Collecting the seed is not tifj
since the scattered plants
