A&M STUDY SHOWS
A recent study by the Texas
Transportation Institute may af
fect future design of freeways.
Based on data obtained at accident
scenes in five major cities, the
study indicated that curious motor
ist hamper freeway traffic.
Using moving cameras, the re
search team photographed actual
freeway accident scenes in Dallas,
Fort Worth, San Antonio, Hous
ton and Austin. One camera mount
ed on an aerial bucket and the
other, installed in a station wagon,
patrolled freeways in these cities.
As accidents were reported, the
cameras took positions in the acci
dent area to record traffic flow.

Also used in the study were
films made from TV monitors on
the John Lodge Freeway in De
troit, Michigan.
Researchers found that all signs
of accidents should be quickly
cleared away for effective opera
tion of the freeway. Curious motor
ists congest traffic and create ac
cident hazards at the scene, they
reported.
Drivers caught in congestion be
hind an accident scene become irri
tated and impatient and often take
unnecessary chances maneuvering
past the accident, the study in
dicated.
Emergency vehicles and police
are often forced to detour to get
to the scene of an accident, be
cause of congestion.
Reporting freeway accidents was
also examined since there is usually
no means of communication on
freeway, motorists must walk a
considerable distance to a phone
or rely on a passing vehicle to con
tact the police.
It was found that many cities
had a lack of freeway accident in
formation, hampering efforts of
highway designers to eliminate
problem areas.
Researchers discovered that most
cities do not assign special acci
dent investigation teams to free
way duty. Freeways are generally
considered part of other patrol dis
tricts.
Researchers concluded that since
no two freeway accidents are iden
tical, each requires action judg
ment to minimize congestion and
delay.
Copies of the reseai’ch report on
this study, “Effect of Traffic Ac
cidents on Freeway Operation”, are
available from the TTI, according
to Charles J. Keese, executive offi
cer.
