RUSSIANS SEEMED HUMAN
Scientist Reviews Antarctica Studies
The human qualities of the
Russians with whom he worked
while spending more than four
months aboard Russian vessels
on research assignments to An-
tractica impressed an A&M pro
fessor.
“The fellows on the ship were
the pioneer type — hard-working,
very friendly and very helpful. I
have no way of knowing what
kind of a cross-section of the Rus
sian people they represented,” Dr.
Guy A. Franceschini said. A
meteoroligist, he is an associate
professor in the Department of
Oceanography and Meteorology.
The- National Science Founda
tion backed his study of the ex
change of energy between sea and
air where the cold Antarctic
waters meet warmer waters. He
was aboard the Societ Research
Vessel Ob as an exchange sci
entist while a Russian was aboard
an American ship.
The Ob, more than 400 feet
in length with diesel-electric
powered to average a crusing
speed of 14 knots, had a crew of
65 and carried 43 scientists. Dr.
Franceschini was the only west
erner aboard except when a
stranded Australian was rescued.
A woman scientist — two were
aboard — impressed Dr. Frances
chini by operating personally the
larg’e winch used to haul biologi
cal specimens aboard the Ob.
“They never discussed politics
but talked about scientific and
everyday things,” Dr. Frances
chini said.
A Communist cultural and po
litical officer aboard the Ob
staged a weekly meeting with all
of the Russians, while the daily
newscast from Radio Moscow
made much use of such words as
“captialist” and “imperalist.”
About a fourth of Antarctica’s
rugged coastline was covered by
the Ob, as it made the rounds
in the weeks before winter’s grip
clamped the southmost continent.
Dr. Franceschini and 18 other
scientists returning to the Ob
after a trip ashore had a naiTow
escape.
They traveled in a house-like
compartment towed by a crawler-
type tractor.
The vehicle crossed the shelf
ice above land, made the danger
ous descent to the frozen sea ice
and started the 12-mile trip out
to the Ob.
Hurricane winds whipped the
snow until “it was just like being
in a bottle of milk.” Radar aboard
the ship was used to watch the
tractor and instructions were ra
dioed to the driver each 10 min
utes.
Hours later the vehicle reached
the Ob. Huge floodlights aboard
the ship pierced the blowing snow
enough to guide the scientists to
the safety of the ship.
An early breakfast marked the
safe arrival of the group.
