Shelby Metcalf, who is new to the job of head coach while not new to Aggies, replaced Bob Ro gers following the past hoop year and promptly proceeded to set the stage for improvement upon the popular Rogers’ outstanding record. Metcalf, an amiable guy who is always ready with a witty re mark or some East Texas philoso phy, has already recruited some of the top high school ball players in the state. The recruits include Reggie Gil breath, a 6-7, all-state center from Kennit, and Curly Lenox, brother of the Aggies’ Bennie from League City. nr ite role Causes Lipscomb Death BALTIMORE <A>) — A medical examiner reported today that an overdose of heroin was responsi ble for the death of Gene “Big Daddy” Lipscomb, defensive tac kle for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. Cmdermen Coach Thomas Hopes For Luck Next Year saying he would not sign a con tract for next year if there was any substantial cut in financial support for Texas track scholar ships. Athletic Director Darrell Royal denied any cut was planned. ANOTHER story predicted there would be trobule at Texas if Pat erson were to relieve Lovvorn. It said some members of the Texas track team were even con sidering changing schools. Later, Patterson was hung in effigy on the university campus. Patterson, 49, a hurdler at Rice in the 1930’s, went to Baylor in 1955 after coaching at the Univer sity of Houston 11 years. He di rected Baylor to its first track championship in history in 1960. His teams grabbed two more SWC titles, including this year’s meet at Fayetteville, Ark. Track Coach Charlie Thomas closed out his fifth year as cinder mentor with a third place in the Southwest Conference track and field meet but the statistics are far from indicative of the fine job he has done for the Aggies. For the past two seasons, Thomas has fielded outstanding squads despite damaging injuries to key personnel who were counted on heavily to gain some points for the Cadets. Last season three of his top sprinters were sidelined — R. E. Merritt with mononucleosis, Pat Mitchell with a broken leg and Curtis Roberts with multiple leg injuries. This season Merritt and Mitchell were troubled by leg injuries and were not able to hit their peak. Thomas was dealt severe blows when George Tedford and Ted Nel son had leg trouble late in the sea son. Tedford was A&M’s outstanding sprinter in the 1962 SWC meet while Nelson is a heralded sopho more who held the national 440 re cord and has set several school re- coi’ds. Both recovered in time to com pete in the conference meet, but neither were at their best. However, all this is in the past for Thomas and he will have a good nucleus returning to shoot for the 1964 title.
