Palmer Still Greatest Golfer—Tony Lema Says
By WILL GRIMSLEY

golfer in' This word of caution was passed
THERE MUST BE A REASON
along Wednesday by Tony Lema,
young hotshot of the professional
tour, on the sport’s latest guessing
game: Has Jack Nicklaus over
taken Palmer as the No. 1 man in
tournament golf?
Lema, 29, a bridegroom of less
than a month, was here Wednes
day for a practice tour of the
Westchester Country Club, site of
the $100,000 Thunderbird Classic
June 13-16.
5000 AGGIES
CAN'T BE WRONG
“Not at all,” insisted Lema,
runner-up to Nicklaus in both the
Masters and the Tournament of
Champions at Las Vegas. “I’m
getting a little fed up with this
talk that Arnie is a has-been, and
you’ve been hearing more and
more of it lately.
Lema said fierce determination
was the quality which puts Palm
er a notch above the other pro
golfers.
“Nobody, not even Nicklaus, at
tacks a course the way Arnie
does,” he said.
AGGIES MADE OLD LOU ONE OF THE LARGEST

“It just happens that Palmer is
tired and in a temporary slump
•and Nicklaus is riding a hot streak.
But Arnie will snap back—mark
my words. He’s still the best.”
Lema, third in the current mon
ey winning list behind Nicklaus
and Gary Player, said his person
al ambition is to shake the brides
maid label.

The sports season is over for the 1962-63 school
and we can all look back on the many thrills, the many I
pointments and the many changes.
The first great thrill and perhaps the most e:
was sophomore Danny McIlhanyV.. game-winning 10
kickoff return against Texas Tech in the last 19 sec®
The fleet halfback’s touchdown jaunt set a school recordi
gave Hank Foldberg his first victory as head footballcu
at Aggieland.
Senior Mike Clark provided most of the excitement
most of the scoring in a rather dismal football season
a record breaking seven field goals. Clark accounted f(
the Aggie points in four ball games and the winning mi
against Southern Methodist and Baylor, the other two 0
victories.
Along came basketball season and the future
look too bright with all time great Carroll Broussard to
graduated. But a junior guard named Bennie Lenox,
had been outstanding as a freshman but mediocre as a
more, jumped into the spotlight. When the season was
Lenox had snatched seven school records away from Bi
sard including most points in a game (43) against Texas
Austin.
Then came the time for the long-awaited spring spot
especially baseball, track and golf. The time when a yo)
man’s fancy turns to love and the A&M athlete’s fancytm
to Southwest Conference championships. Aggie fans®
looking forward to a triple crown in the sunshine sports,
But when the trophies were awarded, only theperei
titleists, the golfers, were in the winners circle, andtii
only after a hard struggle
The predominantly junior baseballers fell intoasli
and ended up third behind Texas Christian and Texas,
The track team, pre-meet favorites for the SWC crot}
came up with some injuries to key personnel and
another third place finish to the Aggies’ record.
The first sweeping change in the athletic depart®
came before the school year started when Hank Foil
replaced Jim Myers as head football coach and proceede
move his entire staff down from Wichita to assist him
His first season didn’t turn out so good through nofu
of his own as he had to fight the problems bequeathed
by Myers.
The next- big surprise, which was not really a surpri
to those on the inside, was the departure of Bob Rogers)
head basketball mentor. Rumors that Rogers was hea
greener pastures had been circulating before Foldberg can
on the scene.

place as of the present.
In short, that’s the story for Aggieland sports, F*
certain, more thrills, more disappointments and morec'
are probably in store but only a wacky crystal ball cod
forsee them
The new Battalion sports staff will do its best tote
up to date on all the happenings in and around KyleFp
as well as provide a little amusement here and there, so®-
times unintentionally. The staff is confident that things^!
get better and next year will be a good year.
So from now on From the Sidelines will become Frfi
the Sack and we’ll remember:
It’s not whether we win or lose but what we get pa
for doing it.
