AKMY, WHAT IS AGGIELAND TO YOU?
Aggieland means many different things to many
different people. To some it is the place they met their
lifetime friends and received their formal education,
to others it is the place they learned how to be a man
and to get along with their fellow man.
Although Aggieland may have a special meaning
for each Aggie, all have memories of yelling for that
Fightin’ Aggie Team as we beat T. U. or of singing The
Twelfth Man when we didn’t yell loud enough.
Army, when we go home after these finals let’s
throw our chests out and tell the world that we are proud
to be a Fightin’ Texas Aggie. Let’s keep alive the
heritage left to us by our buddies we’ve honored with
Silver Taps who are no longer able to share it with us.

Student Inmate
Sarah Jeanette Johns, 23, pauses in her college studies in
her state prison cell at Nashville, Tenn., to chat with a
fellow inmate. The Nashville woman has earned 12 college
credits while serving her term for armed robbery and told
the parole board she has been accepted by the University
of Tennessee contingent upon her release. Authorities
said records show Miss Johns has an I. Q. of 124 and termed
her “Brilliant.” (AP Wirephoto)

New Speed Limit,
But Don’t Try It!
AUSTIN (A 5 ) —- Don’t drive
home from work today at 70 miles
an hour and expect the highway
patrolman to be cordial and un
derstanding.
The governor signed the 70 mile-
an-hour speed limit bill Monday,
but —
And here are several “huts” and
“ifs” before the 70 mph signs ap
pear on Texas highways.
IN THE FIRST place, the bill
is not effective until 90 days after
the legislature ends. That will be
Aug. 22 or Aug. 25, depending if
adjournment is May 24 or 27. Un
til then the speed limit on all
state highways is still 60 in the
daytime, 55 at night.
In the second place, the bill di-

rects the State Highway Depart
ment to study traffic and highway
conditions and to post the 70
miles per hour maximum for pas
senger cars only on those highways
capable of handling the extra
speed safely. The night limit for
cars would be 60. Trucks are
limited to 60 and 55.
“JUST TO prejudge the situa
tion, it appears almost all four-
lane, divided hig-hways will get the
new 70 miles per hour rating and
so will many long stretches of two-
lane highways with paved should
ers,” said state highway engi
neer D. C. Greer.
“The bill suits us fine. We think
it is right. It sets a realistic pat
tern for traffic control.”
Greer’s department will make
the traffic surveys and turn over
its recommendations to the State
Highway Commission, which in
turn will designate sections of
highways to carry the speed maxi
mum.
THE BILL also gives the High
way Commission authority to post
minimum speed limits on certain
sections where slow moving traf
fic might endanger faster travel
ing vehicles.
