Page 4 College Station, Texas Friday, April 2G, 19G3 THE BATTALION Equipment Manager Meeks Teller Of Tallest Tale® PPir^ ^ l|g—S i-§ wmm By MAYNARD ROGERS Battalion Sports Writer Beneath the stands of Kyle Field is a small office that is the head quarters of S. M. (Monk) Meeks, the equipment manager and sup ply officer for the athletic depart ment. Meeks’ office could be better described as a museum because of the conglomeration of conversation pieces. On the wall, behind Monk’s desk is a big sign that has the caption, ::Wanted! Dead or Alive, Horse Thief, S. M. Meeks.” Meeks calls this poster one of his prized pos sessions. t SCATTERED ALL over the wall ai*e mounted deer heads with rather unbelievable descriptions attached to them. For instance, one nice-sized buck has this little tag: “Stunned by Rifle Shot, Killed by Bowie Knife After Riding for % Mile, 1919.” BESIDES MEXICAN FOOD ZARAPE RESTAURANT Serves Mrs. Andert’s Wiener Schnitzel, Chicken Fried Steaks and Austrian Style Fried Chicken. Telephone VI 6-5235 Meeks always 1 has a wisecrack for everything. One day a fresh man footballer came to him com plaining about the shoes he had to wear in practice. “Shucks,” Monk said. “When John Crow was here he had one pair of shoes to last him four years. He only wore them at games and went barefoot the rest of the week in practice.” THE HEAD MAN in handling the helmets and pads is also famous for his pranks. Just the other day line coach Craig Randall came storming into Meeks’ hide away wondering who was respon sible for stashing a dead bird in his desk. Monk swore that he was innocent but there was some doubt of that. Meeks is also known ai'ound town as the father of Tommy Meeks, the fine halfback on the Aggie eleven.
