New Evidence Uncovered
In Bryant-Butts Scandal
ATLANTA, Ga. (A 5 ) — Georgia
Atty. Gen. Eugene Cook said Wed
nesday his investigation had un
covered tabulations of telephone
calls placed by Wally Butts, former
University of Georgia Athletic di
rector, to persons who had records
of being involved in gambling on
intercollegiate contests.
Cook said the calls were “in
close proximity” to an alleged
Sept. 14 call from Butts to Coach
Paul Bear Bryant of Alabama.
“But there is no evidence that
Butts was engaged in gambling,”
Cook said.
THE SATURDAY Evening Post
has charged that Butts and Bryant
were in collusion to fix the Ala-
bama-Georgia game last Sept. 22
which Alabama won 35-0. The
Post said in its March 23 edition
that various betting lines favored
Alabama by 14 to 17 points.
Both men have denied the Post
charges and Butts has filed a $10-
million libel suit against the mag
azine’s publishers.
Cook said telephone records
showed Butts placed calls to some
persons known to have been in
volved in gambling. The attorney
general said some of the calls
were placed shortly before the
Sept. 14 call in which, the Post
said, Butts gave away Georgia’s
football secrets to Bryant.
THE MATTER is being pur
sued by a U.S. Senate committee,
of which Sen. John L. McClellan,
D-Ark., is chairman, Cook said.
Chief counsel Donald F. O’Don
nell of the Senate committee was
not available immediately for
comment.
Butts’ attorney, William H.
Schroder, said he understood
Cook’s statement “informed the
public that there is no evidence
that Coach Wallace Butts was
engaged in gambling.
“O’Donnell has stated that he
uncovered no evidence that either
Coach Butts or Coach Bryant had
been or were engaged in any
gambling activity, and he is work
ing hand in hand with Mr. Cook’s
office.
“As I understand it, it is Mr.
O’Donnell mission to investigate
this field and not that of Mr.
Cook.
“I cannot understand how one
holding the high position of at
torney general of the state of
Georgia could in one breath, in
sinuate that he had uncovered
evidence which implies that Wal
lace Butts had gambled on foot-
“Outlaw Boxing”
Says Texas Solon
AUSTIN CP) — Rep. Charles
Wilson of Trinity introduced a
bill today to outlaw professional
boxing in Texas.
The House voted 116-8 to sus
pend rules and accept the meas
ure. It must get committee ap
proval before members can de
bate the bill.
Wilson told the House the bill
is an outgrowth of the deaths of
Davey Moore and Benny Paret
in championship matches.
“I am introducing this bill be
cause of the barbaric state to
which professional boxing has
sunken. It is more like dueling
than a sport with the 6-ounce
gloves they use,” Wilson said.
ball games and then in the very
next breath, say there in no evi
dence to support such an in
sinuation.”
IN A LETTER to Cook, Schroder
said he believed nothing could be
gained by subjecting Butts to a
second lie detector test. Cook had
asked that Butts take a polygraph
test after the former coach said
he passed another kind of lie de
tector test.
“In my judgment, nothing can
be gained by us getting into the
middle of a schap between the
manufacturers of competing lie
detector machines, each of which
has its own die-hard supporters,”
Schroder wrote.
COOK HAD said the test taken
by Butts and consisting of elec
trodes attached to a finger of
each hand was inferior to the
polygraph.
Cook indicated his investigation,
begun nearly two weeks ago, was
almost complete and a report would
be made Monday to Gov. Carl
E. Sanders, who ordered the state
probe.
“I am confident that my in
vestigation will clear the air and
give the public a clear and con
cise view of what we deem to be
the truth,” Cook said. “And the
state government will be no long
er concerned.”
Cook said evidence he has ac
cumulated “will have to be con
sidered in the lights of laws and
even rules of the SEC.” He said
he would make certain recommend
ations to the governor and give
his opinion on any etical question
involved.
