Board Denies
Coed Plans
Rumors that a move toward co
education is planned in April
were denied this week by all nine
members of the A&M System
Board of Directors.
The directors said the issue
had been discussed informally,
but that no definite plans have
been made for the next board
meeting, scheduled here April 2,7.
Agendas for the meeting have
not been compiled.
The rumors indicate that coeds
may be admitted into the gradu
ate school next September, with
the admission of day student girls
to follow soon afterward. Plans
for housing coeds on campus have
reportedly not been discussed.
Any decision by the board on
the issue will be final.
According to two reliable sourc
es in the athletic department,
Rogers was told to resign or be
fired without recommendations
from the school.
News of the resignation was
confirmed Friday as Athletic Di
rector Hank Foldberg immediate
ly named former assistant Shel
by Metcalf to the head coach posi
tion.
A replacement for Metcalf has
not been named.
Reports Indicate
Rogers Pressured
The Battalion learned Monday
that basketball coach Bob Rogers
did not resign voluntarily. The
popular Cadet mentor submitted
his resignation last Thursday.

Would Like Job
Basketball coach Archie Porter
of Dallas Thomas Jeffei’son con
firmed Wednesday night that he
is a top candidate for the assist
ant coach position vacated by
Shelby Metcalf. Speaking to The
Battalion’s sports staff by tele
phone, Porter said he would be
happy to get the job and hoped
an agreement could be reached.
Porter, 38, coached Thomas Jef
ferson to the state Class 4-A
championship in 1962 after a
second place finish in 1959. His
talented crew placed third in this
year’s state tournament and had
a 35-3 overall record.
Confirmation of Porter’s ap
pointment would have to come
from Athletic Director Hank
Foldberg and the Athletic Coun
cil.

AUSTIN — Texas received a
substantial $31 million boost in
1962 as the Texas Tourist Indus
try registered a seven per cent
gain, the Texas Highway Depart
ment announced Thursday.
Making its annual report on
tourist industry, the department
said tourists spent $471 million in
Texas during 1962 — $13 million
increase over the previous year.
Texas also showed a gain in
total number of tourists, with
9.6 million out-of-state visitors
coming to Texas in 1962. This
was 1.2 million more than the
comparable total for 1961 — an
increase of some 14 per cent.

Tribal Hatred
LEOPOLDVILLE, the Congo
DP) — A blockade on food enter
ing the Congo capital, im
posed by the neighboring central
Congo province, has raised tribal
hatreds to fever.point. Europeans
and Africans alike fear a spark
may touch off hunger riots.
Control of Leopoldville is part
of the picture. The central Congo
province, created last summer as
a stronghold for the Bakongo
tribe living between Leopoldville
and the Atlantic Ocean, claims
the city as its bailiwick. Premier
Cyrille Adoula and his govern
ment last November neutralized
the city as a nontribal federal
capital for the Congo.
“We are suffering,” say Congo
lese from the townships. Normal
ly loath to share their troubles
with Europeans, they have had
their tongues lessened by hunger.
The number of sad-eyed begging
in the streets has Inultiplied.
The blockade deprives Leopold
ville markets of most fresh vege
tables, fruit and manioc, the
starchy root that makes up the
bulk of the Congolese diet.
Agricultural aviation is the third
largest branch of civil flying in
America.
