THE BATTALION
Cincinnati Seeks Third Straight NCAA Title
Against Tough Trio In Louisville This Weekend
LOUISVILLE, Ky. UP) — “I
keep hearing people say Cincin
nati’s not as strong as they were
the last two years,” Abe Lemons,
basketball coach at Oklahoma City
University, drawled Wednesday.
“But who beats them ? Have
they changed the rules or some
thing, or doesn’t it still count just
as much to win a game by six
points as it does by 12?”
Lemons arrived in Derbytown
along with the others in the van
guard of the nation’s coaching
fraternity for the basketball
coaches’ convention that annually
accompanies the semifinals and
finals of the National Collegiate
championships.
AS EXPECTED, most of the lob
by talk was about top-ranked Cin
cinnati’s bid to win an unprecedent
ed third straight NCAA title and
how much of a threat will come
from the other three semifinalists
- second - ranked Duke, third -
ranked Chicago Loyola and up
start Oregon State.
Duke, 26-2 with a 20-game win
ning streak, plays Loyola, 27-2, in
the opening semifinal Friday night
with once-beaten Cincinnati seek
ing its 26th victory against Oregon
State 22-7, in the second game
of the doubleheader at Freedom
Hall.
The championship game is
scheduled for 9:36 p.m., EST, Sat
urday night.
THE SEMIFINALS will offer a
complete contrast in styles for the
sellout crowd in excess of 18,000
Friday. Both Cincinnati and Slats
Gil’s Oregon State practice ball
control. Neither fast breaks much.
