Happy Birthday!
'Aggie baseball coach Tom Chandler celebrated his 38th
birthday Tuesday while his Cadets were losing their third
gapie of the season 8-4 to the Sul Ross Lobos. Chandler is
in his fifth year as A&M diamond mentor and is favored
to ^ain his second conference title after a near-miss last
season. The Aggies won the title in 1959.

One problem that Aggie centerfielders don’t have to
worry about this season is losing the ball in a multi-colored
background of fans.
The green wooden bleachers of Kyle Field during a base
ball game look about as anemic as Casey Stengel after a
New York Met’s baseball game. But even the losing Mets
have ardent fans while Coach Tom Chandler’s winning di
amond crew is playing to a home crowd that would do well to
fill a small telephone booth.
This season Aggie fans have a chance to see the best
team ever fielded by A&M and a team that is favored to win
the Southwest Conference championship. Student body sup
port is vitally needed to accomplish this feat.
The seating capacity is only 4,000 and all games start
at 3 p. m., which allows most students to make it to the game
and get back in time for evening chow.
And if Aggie fans are normal, red-blooded supporters,
they can get their fill of peanuts, popcorn and yelling at the
umpire, as well as seeing the power-laden Cadets riddle
opposition pitching for numerous home runs.
Add this to the enjoyment of spending the afternoon
in the great outdoors and you have a combination that’s
hard to beat.
So let’s give Coach Chandler and crew a little of that
Aggie spirit to push him to the first place slot starting Satur
day afternoon when Baylor hits College Station for the first
home conference game.
Contrary to any rumors, there is no one named Kennedy
on the baseball team nor a Goldwater. So politics is no excuse
for not coming out and supporting the current A&M nomina
tion for conference honors.

Dallas Jeff Coaching Whiz
Says He Wants A&M Post 1
Mm.
By JIM BUTLER
Battalion Ass’t Sports Editor
Archie Porter, Dallas Jefferson
basketball coach, told The Battalion
in a telephone interview Wednesday
that he would be “extremely hap
py” if he. were hired as A&M
freshman basketball coach.
Porter would replace Shelby Met
calf, who was promoted to head
cage coach following Bob Rogers’
resignation late last week.
“Shelby discussed the possibility
with me earlier and I am very
hopeful that an agreement can be
reached,” Porter said.
Porter, 38, coached Thomas Jef
ferson High School of Dallas to
the state Class 4-A cage title in
1962 after a second place finish
in 1959. This past season, Jef
ferson compiled a 35-3 record while
finishing third.
Metcalf, 32, recommended Por
ter and expressed his belief that
the personable Dallasite would do
a fine job.
In addition to Porter’s duties as
Fish mentor, he would assist Met
calf in coaching the Aggie varsity.
Final confirmation of the ap
pointment will have to come from
Athletic Director Hank Foldberg
after being approved by the Ath
letic Council.
