The Bent Monument is in mem
ory of the more than 15,000 engi
neering graduates from A&M and
their contributions to engineering
in the past. James D. Carnes, vice
president of the campus chapter,
was master of ceremonies, and Dr.
Cliff Harris, director of the Baptist
Student Union, offered the invoca
tion and benediction.
Keith P. Watts dedicated the
monument and Di\ Richard E.
Wainerdi, associate dean of engi
neering, accepted the monument for
A&M.
J. W. Amyx outlined the history
and traditions of Tau Beta Pi,
which was founded in 1885. The
campus chapter was organized in
1948. More than 1,500 members
have been initiated from the stu
dent body, faculty and alumni.
The dedication to the engineers
of the future recognizes the role of
A&M in supplying engineers to the
state and nation. The inscription
reads: “To Leading Engineers of
the Future, Tau Beta Pi, Class of
1963.”
The first successful use or air
planes in farming occured in 1921
when the Ohio Agricultural Ex
periment Station ran tests in in

Power Line Laying
To Snarl Traffic
Laying an underground 12,740
volt primary transmission line at
the heart of the campus represents
a major step forward but also will
result in some inconvenience, How
ard Badgett, manager of the Of
fice of Physical Plant, said Mon
day.
Military Walk, the Sbisa Dining
Hall area and the Guion Hall area,
will be affected, Badgett said. The
line will be the first half of a pow
er loop designed to meet rapidly-
increasing demands for electricity.
THE CONTRACT calls for the
new system to be in service by
the first of July in order to pick
up the electrical load created by
extensive airconditioning of dif
ferent buildings. The project could
not be delayed until summer, and
trees along the street make it ad
visable to lay the line under the
street, Badgett said.
“It will be an inconvenience at
this time, but the contractor has
promised to cooperate by keeping
the street open for through traffic
and parking areas as much as pos
sible,” he said.
The work js being done through
the A&M System’s Office of Physi
cal Plant with Delta Electric Dis-
Hill Top Lake for fishing, picnicing,
shade, tables, oven. Children under 12

Sanders Is Elected
To Republican Post
At State Meeting
Jim Sanders, junior agronomy
student from Texarkana, was elect
ed treasurer of the Texas Young
Republican Federation at the state
Young Republican Convention held
last weekend in Tyler.
Sanders was also elected as a
Texas delegate to the National
Young Republican Convention in
San Francisco Calif, in June.
John Hilliard, also of A&M, was
elected district committeeman on
the State Young Republican Com
mittee.
Other officers elected were
George Darby of Pampa, chaii’-
man; Miss Joy Hamilton of Texas
Tech, co-chairman; Neil Calnan of
the University of Texas, first vice
chairman; Carlton Suiter of San
Antonio, second vice chairman; Joe
Kindx-ed of North Texas State, sec
retary; Larry Amerine of Baylor,
college chairman; and Dan Hedges
of Houston, high school chairman.
Sen. John Tower was the key
note speaker at the convention
banquet Saturday night.
tribution Co. of San Antonio as
contractor. The Board of Directors
authorized the $87,600 contract
with Delta in February. W. W.
Scott serves as immediate project
representative for the System of
fice.
PRELIMINARY work has begun
in the vicinity of the Cottonseed
Products Research Laboratory.
This consists of drilling holes in
the earth to verify the locations of
electrical lines. Shortly, weather
permitting, construction should
begin along Military Walk.
The new system will begin at the
Power Plant and be routed to Ross
Street by way of the Cottonseed
Products Lab. The line will cross
Ross Street at a point near the
front' of the Exchange Store and
then extend from the parking area
in the rear of the store to Military
Walk near Leggett Hall. At the
Guion Hall end of Military Walk,
the line will skirt Hart Hall and
the Physics Building and run to
the substation in the rear of the
Biological Sciences Building.
Plans call for one manhole in
the parking- area behind the Ex
change Store, five manholes on
Military Walk and several others
along the routing of the high volt
age undex’ground line.
“As much as he can, the contrac
tor is going to work on one section
at a time,” Badgett said.
Biological ‘Clocks’
Discussed In Talk
A widely known authority on
biological “clocks” in animals will
deliver a lecture here Tuesday.
The speaker will be Dr. C. S.
Pittendrigh, professor of biology at
Princeton University.
The public has been invited to
hear his talk on “Biological Clocks
and Time Measuring Ability of
Animals” at 3:30 p.m. in the Bio
logical Sciences Lecture Room.
Pittendi’igh’s research has shown
that fruit flies, an insect much
used in genetics studies, can ac
tually tell the time of day. By
doing so, the flies emex’ge from
the pupal stage at the most oppox’-
tune time.
While on campus, Pittendrigh
will confer with Dr. Perry Adkis-
son, associate entomology profes
sor, on possible collaboration in
future research work. Adkisson is
currently conducting studies on
time measuring abilities of the pink
bollwox’in.
