Paffe 4 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, March 7, 1963 NAME-CHANGE i) as be- (Continued From Page Texas State University, ing undesirable. Sophomore Charles Way from Houston, said: “Everyone calls me a farmer, but I’m a B.A. student, so I had rather not have another name that keeps the words agricul tural and mechanical in it.” Glenn Watkins, sophomore electrical engineer from Marlin, said: “Changing our name to Texas State University would be just like changing MIT’s name to Massachusetts State University. “Sen. Moore is forgetting about the traditions behind the name A&M. Everyone would call us Texas State University, not Texas State University and the Agricultural and Mechanical College. “I think the board of directors has the right idea in requesting a name that will still be popu larly called A&M.” John Rawley, junior electrical engineer from Houston, said: “If we use the name Texas State University and the Agri cultural and Mechanical College, the words agricultural and me chanical would be dropped by most people. A&M is rated sec ond to Rice in Texas as an engi neering school, and if you drop the name A&M, then our degree means no more to employers in other states than a degree from Texas A&I or Lamar Tech. “A degree from A&M is worth a lot, and most people who come here pass up ‘advantages’ like easier course loads and coedu cation just to gain the status that is associated with A&M. “If A&M were dropped from the name, I might as well trans fer to another school and have fun while I’m getting my de gree.” Some of the students polled were asked if they thought an A&M degree with the word uni versity printed on it would be more valuable than a degree us ing the word college. Louis Piboin, a Madisonville freshman majoring in industrial engineering, said: “A degree from Texas A&M is worth a lot anyway, but the word university would add a lit tle more class.” Richard Roneskevitz, junior wildlife major from Garb; N.J., said: “No, this school is alreat; known for what it is, and acL ing university to its name wiir make that much difference, i|| school isn’t what its name is,bf what type of graduates it pel kd out.’ 111 The efforts of nearly million men were required to o qate, A& the Panama Canal. k' Mnnis pa - theii' eight $ 100 WINNERS .n"E-Z MONEY ! the world's grew • lii has com ★MRS.
