Despite the loss of last semes
ter’s best offensive men, the A&M
soccer team took a comeback vic
tory over the “Mexico” team of
Houston Sunday, 6-2.
It was the 11th straight win
for the Aggies, after having scored
a victory by forfeit over the Hous
ton Athletics a week earlier. A&M
now has a perfect record with
eight of its efforts in the Houston
Conference.
The Ags stand three games
ahead of Houston’s United Club,
which is second in the league.
Ramiro Gereda, last semester’s
leading scorer for the Aggies, and
Carlos Matamoros, the former
captain, have left the team this
term. Their absence was severely
evident Sunday for, while they
controlled the. ball for most of
the game, the Ags could not score
until the very end. They had
trailed, 2-1, until the closing-
minutes.
A&M’s scorers against “Mexico”
were Rodrigo Palacios with two,
and Carlos Balarezo, Carlos Ri
vera, Carlos Trujillo and Hugo
Elguero with one goal each.
New team captain Benito Lopez
was, the outstanding player in the
game at fullback.
This term, the Ags have new
defensive strength in Trujillo and
Rodriquez.
The soccer team will travel to
Hoviston Sunday where it will
meet a team representing Fort
Worth in the State of Texas Con
ference. If they win the game,
the Aggies will go to Dallas to
play the Dallas Conference cham
pion for the state title.

By Jim Butler
Two years ago, Jimmie Guy, then a sophomore on the
A&M bowling team, won the Region IX Association of Col
lege Unions all-events title and a trip to Detroit, Mich., for
the National ACU Tournament—the highest honor for a
collegiate bowler.
One week before he was to leave for Detroit, fate can
celled Jimmie’s trip and the date, March 2, 1961, 12 :30 a. m.,
is one the plucky little junior from Snyder will never forget.
A comeback story to match any started and almost
ended in the wee hours of that foggy March night.
Jimmie was returning from a little town of Ira where
he had had a date with his fiancee to his home in Snyder, 11
miles away.
He fell asleep at the wheel and when he awoke his car
was wrapped around a utility pole. Five hours later he was
found and rushed to the hospital. For six days Jimmie re
mained in a coma, not expected to live.
On the sixth day he regained consciousness, paralyzed
from the neck down. Doctors, marveling at his will to live,
doubted that would ever walk again, let alone bowl.
Rut Jimmie couldn’t be convinced.
Tin February, 1962, he returned to school. With the aid
of a cane he walked to class and to the bowling lanes where
he watched the Aggies practice. His right hip had been
pulverized and he wore a steel pin from his hip to his knee.
Before long, Jimmie substituted a bowling ball for the
cane and began the arduous task of rebuilding the form
that had won him the right to compete in the'national tourna
ment.
Wearing a bowling shoe on his right foot that was built-
up three-eighth of an inch, he slowly regained the feel of the
ball, the lanes and his new approach. -
After a summer of practice, Jimmie returned to A&M
determined to bowl again with the team he had led.
Last Saturday in Dallas, his resolution was realized.
Jimmie rolled 606 to lead the Aggies to second place in the
tournament and totaled 1,817, a 202 average, for the nine
games to win an all-expense paid trip to Buffalo, N. Y. for
the National ACU Tournament.
