Aggies’ most consistent winner Ted Nelson, 8 Other Aggies To Compete In Dallas Friday Ted Nelson, the Aggie flash, seeks his second special 500-yard dash victory -within a week in the feature event of the Dallas Indoor Meet Friday night. He is one of nine A&M athletes who will compete, according to Aggie track coach Charles Thomas. Nelson captured the 500-yard dash in the Will Rogers Indoor Games at Fort Worth last Satur day, beating former University of Texas star Ralph Alspaugh, Ran dall Walker of Northeast Louisi ana State and two Olympic silver medal winners, Eddie Southern and Cliff Cushman. Nelson’s time was 58 seconds flat. For that tremendous effort and for a great anchor leg, which brought the Aggies home second in the one-mile relay, Nelson was voted the Games’ outstanding ath lete. The Aggies’ most consistent winner, Danny Roberts, will be in the shot put field. He holds the state indoor record of 57-3% and has been beaten only once in al most three years of indoor com petition. Thomas has entered contestants in six other events including: 60-yard hurdles, Don Kooser; 600-yard dash (open division), Gene Westmoreland; 600-yard dash (university division), Jerry Anderson; 300-yard dash, Gene Dornak; one-mile relay, R. E. Mer ritt, Jim Sebastian, George Ted- ford and Nelson; and broad jump, Dan Meadows. FROM THE ined By Van Conner Everybody, including us, seems to have A&M’s proposed start of spring football training fouled up. Contrary to what might have been read here or elsewhere, the Aggies will start knocking heads, weather permitting, on Monday, Feb. 25. Then they’ll have 36 days to get in 20 workouts. As it now stands, the annual spring game will climax the 4-week practice. Coach Hank Foldberg says he expects about 80 young hopefuls to be ready to go when the training period starts. Recruiters Have Been Busy Speaking of young hopefuls, A&M’s football coaching corps has been sweeping across Texas in force these past few weeks, recruiting a host of lads who’ll start their college careers next fall. Several newspapers across the state have already released names of high school grads picked up by Southwest Conference teams. Foldberg wants to wait until all the recruiting reports of this current campaign are in to pass on information about Aggie signings. So far things look real good. We’ll probably know most of the story next week. Cagers May Catch Up Soon A look at the record books shows that Cadet basket- bailers are about to even up the overall won-lost slate. Since the advent of basketball at Aggieland in 1913, A&M teams have taken 519 victories and suffered 524 losses. F. D. Steger was the first Aggie cage mentor. In that 1913 season he posted a 4-2 record. Steger was here three seasons. During the first 20 years of basketball at A&M under Steger, Tubby Graves, W. H. H. Morris, Bill Driver, D. X. Bible, C. F. Bassett and J. B. Reid, Aggie teams kept pretty far ahead in wins. .But then came some pretty long periods of victory- drought. Things never really did get squared away until Bob Rogers came in 1958. The Oklahoma product has a 98- 50 slate so far at A&M. Fish Caught Habit, Too Fish basketball teams have caught the winning habit over the last few years as well. Since Coach Shelby Metcalf arrived in 1959, Aggie Fish have a 37-17 slate. The current Fish team, which, owns a 5-2 record, is one of the best Metcalf has produced.
