Cadet Riflemen Take Second
In 4th Army Mail-In Match
The Fourth U.S. Army has an
nounced results showing the A&M
Rifle Team placed second in the
Fourth U. S. Army Area Indoor
Smallbore Championship Rifle
Matches.
The competing teams represent
ed active Army divisions, major
installations, reserve units and Re
serve Officer Training Corps units
in a five-state area.
A&M Range

team match competition Sunday.
Sharpshooting teams from each
battle groun in the divisions as
well as D’V’sion Artillery, Special
T-oops. Division Tramees and the
?1 5th Engineer Battalion will have
their sights set on team trophies
a^d individual honors. Awards
will be given in both .22 caliber
P'stol and .22 caliber rifle matches.
The rifle teams will consist of
f've firing members and two alter
nates, while the pistol teams will
be made up of four firing members
and two alternates.
At least one-half of the firing
members of each team will be
“new shooters” who have not fired
in this competition befoi’e,
Fii-ing will begin at 8 a.m. un
der the east stands of Kyle Field.

90th Division Headouarters Com
pany will be the match director.
The Louisiana State University
team ranked first in the match
conducted by each team firing on
its home range and mailing the re
sults to Fourth Army.
The Aggies’ high point man was
James H. Elder, whose score was
high enough to place him fourth
on individual team honors. Elder
fired 388 points out of a possible
400.
’I'he A A.M team fired 3.797
points out of a possible 4.000 in
the four position, 10-man match.
A." Athletic Teams
To Visit Austin
Eight More Times
A p’gie athletic teams will nmke
eight appearances in A.ustin during
the next four months.
Cadet swimming, basketball,
baseball, track and tennis souads
will be in action against home
town Texas and other opponents.
The A&M schedule for Austin
by dates:
Feb. 16: Swimming vs. Texas.
Feb. 19: Basketball vs. Texas.
March 15: Swimming (South-
west Conference Meet).
March 16: Baseball vs. Texas.
Anril 5: Track (Texas Relays).
April 6: Track (Texas Relays).
April 20: Tennis vs. Texas.
May 2: Track triangular (A&M,
Rice. Texas).
Ortiz Defends Title Against D. Vaillant
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (A*)—
Harold Toppel, a San Juan pro
moter, announced Monday that
world lightweight champion Car
los Ortiz will defend his crown
against Doug Vaillant, fourth
ranking contender, at San Juan’s
Municipal Stadium, March 30.
Vaillant. a Cuban, now lives in
Miami, Fla.
Ortiz, a native of Ponce, P.R.,
who now lives in New York, long
has expressed a desire to appear
in a major fight in Puerto Rico.
He won the 135 pound title from
Joe Brown last April 20 and in
his onlv defense knocked out Ja
pan’s Teruo Kosaka in the fifth
round at Tokyo Dec. 3.
The World Boxing Association
has warned Ortiz to defend the
title against Kenny Lane, the No.
1 contender from Muskegon, Mich.,
or face possible loss of his crown.
Aggies’ Alleys

Aggie bowlers met some stiff
competition in Austin Saturday
and dropped to second place a
game and a half behind the Uni-
vers’ty of Texas in the Texas In
tercollegiate Bowling Conference.
The Cadets won seven and
d^onned five for the day, while
the longhorns took 8% games
while losmg 3V>.

day, the Aggies fell three games
to a hot San Antonio Coboo-e team.
A&M shot a good 2,725 but the
Rangers rolled 2,775 on the
strength of a 1,003 garnet
Rorhoraore Ray Snow led the
Agg’es to a clean four game sweep
of Sam Houston State in the sec
ond match. Snow shot 212-622 and
innior Bob Korose chinned in a I

The toughest match of the day

ers winning trios to Buffalo. N.Y.,

the Region IX team and teamed up

of Arkansas to win the national
doubles title.

Mid-Year Bowling Classic has end
ed at the MSC Lanes and Wayoe
Deonev holds down first place with
a handicapped 648 series.
ZELMAN JOSEPH shot a 642
for second place and Skinper Rob
inson’s 637 holds down third.
The handicap singles tourna
ment has two more weeks to run.

Bill (Jitterbug) Henderson, for
whom the Aggie Athletic dormi
tory is named, earned 11 varsity
letters in five sports and three
freshman numerals in addition to
winning the intramural heavy
weight boxing and handball titles
at A&M from 1939 through 1943.
The nation’s three leading riders
of 1962—Bill Shoemaker, Ronnie
Ferraro and Bill Hartack—had 13
mounts between them one day this
fall at Belmont Park. Shoemaker
won the only race that day, scoring
with odds-on Staretta.
