THE BATTALION will met; Hoom oi ■> Dance Contest Fish Dick Rector (42) and Texas Yearling late stages of the skirmish and ended up Platt Davis had a brief misunderstanding looking more like a jitterbug tourney than a Tuesday night when the Aggie Freshmen basketball game, won, 66-62. The photo caught them in the Texas Offers $282, OOO In Biggest Golf Year Yet By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer Texas’ biggest golf year is com ing up. • There will be $282,000 in prize money. It is the most ever offered in this state. Last year Texas put up $240,000, then the all-time high. WHAT MAKES 1963 the big gest year is the National PCA, scheduled for the Dallas Athletic Club Country Club July 18^-21. This tournament last year paid out $72,000 when held at Philadel phia. First place got $13,000. That’s more than the top money- winner of golf earned 25 years ago. What will be provided in the PGA in Dallas won’t be known un til the income is determined, but there is no reason to believe that Texas can’t have as big a tourna ment as anybody. Total receipts will run around $300,000. The Houston Classic and Co lonial National Invitation tourna ments to be held in late April and early May will post $50,000 each. The Texas Open at San Antonio April 22-28 will have $30,000 prize money. The Dallas Open, which paid $35,000 last year, won’t be held in deference to the National PGA but Odessa will have its $30,000 pro-amateur and in the fall Beau mont will put on its $20,000 Open. THERE WILL be three women’s tournaments, paying a total of $25,000. They will be the Dallas Civitan, Babe Zaharias Open at Beaumont and the San Antonio Civitan. Austin held a woman’s tournament last year but isn’t ex pected to repeat. Texas comes nearer to the No. 1 spot in the nation than ever be fore, but still will have to be hap py with No. 2. California offers more than $300,000 in golf prize money. Texas’ biggest year comes with out a Texan among the top play ers. Bobby Nichols o f Midland was the heaviest winner last year, with $34,311.92, but he still ranked No. 9 on the list. Billy Maxwell was twelfth with $31,834.04, while Jacky Cupit of Longview was twenty-first with $24,507.25. MAXWELL HAS a residence in Dallas but last year was insisting on being listed as from Las Vegas. That was one of the things he was ired about at the Dallas Open. He was angry with some of the writ ers who didn’t carry his listed hometown. But Maxwell’s relations with the press haven’t been very amicable anyway. He is a throwback to Sam Snead, who usually gave the cold shoulder to the press. Back in the forties, the tournament di rector at times corralled Snead and brought him in for a'talk with the sports writers in an effort to bring better relations. At the Dallas Open Maxwell, al though leading the tournament, declined to talk to the press or anybody at the conclusion of his third round. Maxwell and Snead had one thing in common: con sistency. They were as likely to give the press the run-around whether they had a good score or a high one. Just what they thought they were accomplishing with this atti tude was difficult to understand. However, they both have done all right in golf even with the press irked at them most of the time. They had the advantage. The press couldn’t ignore a winner. Cassius Clay Raised To 2nd NEW YORK <AP) — Ambitious, young Cassius Clay has been pro moted to No. 2 heavyweight con tender in the latest monthly rat ings of Ring Magazine. Sweden’s Ingemar Johansson, another former champion, was lift ed from sixth to fourth. Zora Fol- ley of Chandler, Ariz., who was knocked out by Jones, was demot ed from third to sixth.
