DOME HAS PURPOSE

But what’s the dome for?
That is the most common ques
tion a&ked by Aggies (and vis
itors) when they view construc
tion of the new architecture
building.
For the new structure is com
posed of two parts; one is the
main glassed-in structure and
the other is a curious square
building with the derby-hat
shape.
Claimed to be one of the best-
equipped architectural research
centers in the United States, ac
cording to Theo R. Holleman,
head of the Division of Archi
tecture, the buildings are mod-
ernly constructed brick edifices
which will house both the under
graduate and research centers of
architecture.
In an effort to coordinate
teaching, research and practice,
the two buildings arte being con
structed side by side. In fact,
there are two archways, one on
the upper level and one on the
ground, which connect the two.
The dome building is the re
search area. The dome itself is
what Holleman calls a “simu
lated sky.” Built in a half-moon
shape and resting on top of the
almost perfectly square building,
the structure will be used to do
research work in light effects
upon structure models.
