Hardin Will Not
Quit At Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (A 5 ) _ Navy
ended speculation Wednesday that
its head football coach, Wayne
Hardin, would leave the academy
to become coach of Stanford.
Hardin, who has been at Navy
since 1955 and has been head
coach for the past four years,
was rumored among top prospects
to succeed Jack Curtice, whose
contract was not renewed at Stan
ford.
“We want to put an end to the
speculation concerning the Naval
Academy football coaching job,”
Capt. William S. Busik, director
of athletics said in a statement.
“Wayne Hardin will fill that
position in 1963 as he has for the
past four years.
“Wayne will remain on the
West Coast for the rest of this
month and return to the academy
the first of February to begin
mapping plans for spring prac
tice,” said Busik.
bounder with 94, followed by
Woodard with 74 and 7-foot Lewis
Qualls with 73.
Walker owns the best field goal
shooting percentage, 41 of 76 for
54 per cent and has hit 16 of 26
in SWC play for 62 per cent. Le«-
ox has proved the best free throw
artist among players having shot
25 or more times. His percentage
is 79 (73 of 96).
ROGERS’ AGGIES lead in all
statistical departments over their
opponents and own records of 10-3
for the year and 3-1 in SWC ac
tion.
A&M is hitting at a 44 per cent
clip from the field (350-801) and
73 per cent from the free throw
line (251-344). Aggie opponents
own a field goal shooting percent
age of 39 (309-798) and have con
nected on 68 per cent of their
gratis tosses (226-335).
The statistics show A&M with
a wide rebounding edge, 608 to
524, and 4 per-game scoring aver
age of 73.2 to their foes’ 64.9.
It’s mid-term examination time
in the SWC and the Aggies have
a short vacation from court ac- j
tivity.
The Cadets move back into ac
tion Jan. 30 against the University
of Houston at the Houston Coli
seum.
NEXT SWC TEST for A&M is
against the Arkansas Razorbacks
at Fayetteville Feb. 2. Then the
Aggies host league-leading Texas
at G. Rollie White Coliseum Feb.
5. A&M will be going after its
31st consecutive victory at home
in that one.
Rogers hails the mid-term lull
as “just what the doctor ordered.”
He said the break in the sched
ule will give his team, hampered
somewhat by illness and injury, a
chance to get into better condi
tion prior to the next tipoff.
Rogers is especially interested
in getting Windham, the senior
team captain, back in A-l shape.
Windham’s play has been hamp
ered since injury to a muscle in
his left leg in the LSU game
sidelined him.
A&M SEASON percentages for

Lace Panties,
Bare Shoulder
Now In Tennis
LONDON <A?) _ The man who
designed the first pair of lace
panties for Wimbledon’s tennis
courts today unveiled a revolu
tionary tennis dress. It has a
bare strapless shoulder.
“But only one shoulder will be
bare,” said Col. Teddy Tinling.
“The other will be partly cov
ered.”
Years ago Tinling tailored a
pair of lace-trimmed panties for
America’s gorgeous Gussie Mor
an. She didn’t win the Wimbledon
title but she made news all over
the world.
A designer of sports clothes,
Tinling said he has named the
new off-one-should dress “the
Grecian line.”
Reminded that Wimbledon’s
management committee last Oc
tober banned colored panties
from future tournaments, Tinling
said: “The committee imposed a
ban only on color—not styling.”
Players showed up in a wide
variety of colored panties last
summer. Some spectators com
plained they distracted from the
play.
La Tourneau College of Long
view, the only college in Tex ; that
has a varsity wrestling team, won
its second victory over the A&M
wrestling club Saturday, 15-13.
Jerry Windham
The Ags’ second-leading scorer and best rebounder is a 2.13-
pounder from Hamilton. Windham stands 6-6 and has col
lected 160 rebounds. He has a 14.7 per game shooting
average for the year and 10.8 in the SWC. Windham was
leading scorer and rebounder in the conference before a
leg injury sidelined him for three games back in December.
Karras, Wilson Summoned
By League Commissioner
NEW YORK (A>) _ The Detroit
Lions’ head coach, George Wilson,
and All-Pro defensive tackle Alex
Karras were summoned to New
York Wednesday for questioning
by Pete Rozelle, National Football
League commissioner, following
an alleged confession by the play
er that he had bet on games.
The Detroit News said Karras
had made the admission during
a taped television interview Sun
day.
Asked whether he had ever bet
on a game, Karras, the newspaper
said, replied:
“Yes, I have, but who hasn’t?”
The taped show, part of an
NBC newscast, has not yet ap
peared on the air. Tom Gallerey,
NBC sports director, said it prob
ably will be shown Thursday or
Friday evening.
