Page 2 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Tuesday, January 15, 1963 BATTALION EDITORIALS CADET SLOUCH New Registration Plan Is 1st Step Toward Answer Some inconveniences seem to be unavoidable, and rank ing number one at- the present must be the confusion and dispair that will mark another registration session week after next. Even more inevitable than the confusion are the plans tried at many colleges and universities to ease the confusion and speed up the entire procedure. The University of Michigan is experimenting with a new procedure that appears to have many of the attributes of a success. Even this plan, however, is untried and flaws are sure to be evident. At Michigan students selected basic undergraduate courses they wish to take during counseling sessions last semester. Once a student had selected his course, his schedule was forwarded to the registrar. Workers in the registrar’s office then compiled the student’s class schedule (hours, days, etc.) and all the student will do at the actual registra tion session is officially register and have his fees assessed. The most evident area where flaws may arise is in the compiling of a class schedule. The student expresses a desire to take the course, but has no choice as to the hour and day he will attend classes. It is only natural that conflicts will arise in this area. And the only remedy Michigan has is to return the schedule to the student’s college for revision. The plan does have several good points, among them the fact that students will have a far easier time during the actual registration session if their schedules are already compiled. Equally important, however, is the fact that school officials will have an indication of how many students wish to enroll in a course and will be able to assign sufficient space and instructors to handle the course. by Jim Earle Future Dates TQDAY manufacturers’ confer- How this plan would work on other campuses, particular ly A&M, is anyone’s guess. Even at Michigan the program is used only for basic undergraduate courses such as English, chemistry and history, with no changes being made in regis tration procedures for more advaneed courses. The University of Michigan has certainly started at the focal point of the problem. We would only hope that their program is successful and that administrators through out the country would apply Michigan’s learned lesson to their local situations. Get a flying start on Continental! Of course, more, advanced courses are not the main problem at any school’s registration. Here the school has a fairly good indication of how many students will enroll for the course, and students themselves know the section will not be crowded and that there is little likelihood of a closed section. Editor, The Battalion: On Jan. 11 at approximately 10 a.m. my History 105 textbook was mistakenly removed from the rack outside the coffee shop in the 'Memorial Student Center.
