Postmaster Gregg
Urges Early Local
Holiday Mailing
Very few things are cheaper in
this day and age than they were
45 years ago—but air mail still
is, Postmaster Ernest Gregg said
Friday.
On Jan. 7, when the air mail
rate goes up a penny to Sit an
ounce, this service to the Amer
ican people will be in its 45th year,
he noted.
At Christmas time, air mail can
be particularly important, Gregg
noted. For example, he said, late
cards sent by air mail can reach
Chicago from College Station in
less than eight hours; and Key
West, Fla., in eight hours.
Petroleum
Engineering
Shortage Cited
A serious manpower shortage is
developing in petroleum engineer
ing, a professor said here Thurs
day.
Robert L. Whiting, professor and
head of the Department of Petro
leum Engineering, said undei’grad-
uate enrollment in petroleum en
gineering is at an all-time low,
according to a survey he has made
in accredited departments through
out the nation.
Less than 200 petroleum engi
neering seniors will graduate in
1963 to fill the average require
ment of 600 new engineers needed
each year, he said in a report to
the Society of Petroleum Engi
neers. . *
Whiting’s survey was made in
the 21 accredited petroleum en
gineering departments in U. S. col
leges and universities.
HIS SURVEY shows that petro-
Teum engineering graduates are re
ceiving multiple job offers and that
starting salaries are at an alltime
high.
Reports from the 21 departments
indicate that all petroleum engi
neering students in good academic
standing are able to secure summer
employment in the oil industry
while attending college. At the
same time, scholarship opportuni
ties at the junior and senior level
are going unclaimed.
