CHICAGO <AP) — Ron Bull, the
Chicago Bears’ bouncy halfback,
received the hottest honor of his
football career on the coldest day
of his life Wednesday.
Ex-Baylor star Bull, 22, was
named National Football League
rookie-of-the-year by an Associ
ated Press panel of experts just
as Chicago was struck by a re
cord 7 below zero cold wave.
“Even though I’ve never been
colder in my life,” said the hand
some, slick galloper from Waco,
Texas, “I haven’t ever been more
thrilled, either.
‘I’LL CHERISH this honor. It’s
something I hadn’t really thought
would be possible against all the
fine players in the league.
This is like making All-America
in college and All-State in high
school—only in terrifically faster
company. I have a lot of people
to thank, especially Jail my
coaches.”
Bull, Chicago’s No. 1 draft
choice who started his Bear ca
reer this fall as a defensive back,

for 26 yards and didn’t snag a
pass in his first three games.
Yet through Sunday’s 13th
league game, the Baylor bomber
has amassed 372 yards in 103 car
ries for a 3.6 average and caught
29 passes for 324 yards.
Provided Bench Strength
Cecil Ferguson, 6-3 sophomore from Houston (Smiley),
came off the bench to score nine points against the Uni
versity of Southern Mississippi and provide the punch the
Aggies needed to get started toward their 87-61 victory.
Though Ferguson is a junior academically, he did not
participate last year and has three years of eligibility.

Southwest Conference Sportsman
ship Award by tl|e Kiwanis Club
of Fort Worth.
The selections committee was
guided by recommendations from
officials, coaches and players.
A total of 11 players were
nominated, with Gibbs leading the
others. His final selection was by
unanimous vote.
